How about we make February 'change your avatar' month? Pick a theme and stick with it all month and change as often as you like.

What do you think?

Good game Spud and I must say, great theme! My favorite film of all time and the source of many great memories, both childhood and adulthood. Keep it coming :AOK:

Firstly. Gil, I'm loving your theme! I had two grandparents in the RAAF during WW2 and I've had an interest in military aircraft for as long as I can remember. Well all things military actually.

Which brings me to my latest..

Previous pic was me firing the iconic, American made M60 General Purpose Machine Gun firing 7.62x51mm NATO ball rounds. Or as many people refer it it, "The Rambo Gun". I've had several people say to me in one way or another over the years that you cannot fire a weapon like this from the hip, the way Rambo did it. I'm no Rambo, but I'm living proof you can.

This pic is me with arguably the most prolific assault weapon on the planet. The Russian designed, Chinese Made, AK47. Using 7.62mm x 39mm rounds with smaller casing and less oomph than the 7.62mm x 51mm used in the M60 (and M14 etc) it is still a loud angry junkyard dog of a weapon.

I forgot I was wearing the dorky orange ear protection in this pic :(

And now, in keeping with oldguy's bunny theme in the avatar thread, we turn our attention to some of the less friendly bunnies. Some people know about them, but far too few have spoken up..........perhaps out of fear. I thought of starting a separate thread, "Are bunnies bad for you?", but found it too inconclusive. In any event, keep a stiff upper lip, and a sense of humour about you.

I present to you.........[shivers]..............proof of the bunny dark side.

Scaring little children.........for shame, for shame.

Bit of trivia re: Donnie Darko then (seeing as though it'd fresh in your mind..)

The song they play at the end, Mad World, performed by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules (cover of a Tears for Fears song) was used in Australia a little while back as the BT for a TV commercial promoting a news website (ninemsn).

The problem was, after seeing Donnie Darko a few times, I associate that song with his death. It's kind of a sombre but fitting tune to close the film.

When ever I saw the ad on TV though I just thought "How Depressing". Terrible, terrible song selection for an ad.

Although I gotta say, it's sure a popular track in TV and has been used in...

Cold Case
CSI
Emmerdale
ER
Jericho
Judging Amy
Las Vegas
Line of Fire
Medical Investigation
Nip/Tuck
Silent Witness
Smallville
Station X
Tatort
The Cleaner
The L Word
Third Watch
Without a Trace

Anyway, sorry thats rather OT, but I can't help myself sometimes :)

Firing the weapons you mentioned is kind of a rare privilege in your country these days, isn't Ch0jin?

Yes, you certainly can fire an M-60 from the hip...but your accuracy won't be too good beyond spitting range...:D

Firing the weapons you mentioned is kind of a rare privilege in your country these days, isn't Ch0jin?

It certainly would be yes Blooze, I had to surrender all my rifles a number of years back when the laws changed. However these pictures were taken in Cambodia where it's as easy as slipping the right people a bit of US currency.

Yes, you certainly can fire an M-60 from the hip...but your accuracy won't be too good beyond spitting range...:D

Oh I agree completely! I remember thinking whilst shooting it "Wow this thing has way less kick than I expected" However when I watched the video my mate shot, I actually got forced back about 5-6ft over about 200 rounds. I did totally freakin shred a 44 Gallon drum of water though (at a range of I dunno, maybe 50ft) haha.

BTW: I too share your "other" hobby...in a pretty big way...;)

Sadly it's more of a general interest these days than a hobby for me because of the legal situation. Long gone are the days when we could (literally) just belt around the bush in a ute with a bunch of guns shooting at stuff. That's why when I ended up in Cambodia, I jumped at the chance to gain access to a militia base and their arsenal :)

In addition to the AK47 and the M60 I also got to try out a Thompson submachine gun, an M16, a couple of RPG's or "Rocket Launchers" as the locals called them. Tossed a few Frag gren's and killed an innocent shrub with an M203 grenade launcher. Was a top day out, even if we did think we were going to be killed for our passports at one point.
"Get out of the car, give us your passports and walk that way into the bush" were the first instructions we received from two armed soldiers......

They wanted our passports for "security reasons", but they actually ordered us out of the car for the simple reason that they intended to load the boot, err sorry, trunk, with guns and ammo and drive the car out to where we were going to be shooting. As the track was mostly loose sand they wanted us out of the car to help prevent it from getting bogged (it was a big old 70's Merc). However, we didn't find that out until a little after we started walking off into the bush so yeah, we made a few nervous jokes about how four unarmed guys would take out two Cambodian militia armed with AK47's...

Probably wouldn't have been so freaky if they or our hookup spoke better English or I spoke more Khmer than "Thank you" and "No Thank you", but then it wouldn't have been such a good story :)

Enough with images of the patches for the moment - let's get to the planes.

First up is just a McDonnell Aircraft F-101B, a 2-seat fighter interceptor, which in 1959 could go over 1200 MPH, fly at 50K feet, and be guided from the ground with (for the time) very advanced electronics. Her tail number is 80-0270, which translated means 58-270, ie, built in 1958, build number 270. She's carrying one 400-gallon drop tank to extend her range.

It certainly would be yes Blooze, I had to surrender all my rifles a number of years back when the laws changed. However these pictures were taken in Cambodia where it's as easy as slipping the right people a bit of US currency.

I haven't had the opportunity to try an RPG, but I have gone through several thousand rounds in M16's, Thompsons, AK's and a couple of dozen others. Probably the most interesting I've fired was an original German WWII MP44, the grand daddy of the modern assault rifle. I can see why they were so popular on the Russian front. After a couple of dozen rounds on full auto, the metal handguard turns into a heater...

Fortunately, and happily for me, all of my experiences were not firing at anything in anger...just the offending target and water jug or two (except for those LP gas bottles that we dispatched with the Stoner 63...tracers lit them up splendidly. They were obviously Al Qaeda disguised as LP bottles, though ;) )

I'm glad that things didn't turn ugly as you might have first thought, Ch0jin. With the not too distant history of Cambodia in mind, I'm sure you had a few anxious moments.

OK Friday's avatar is a bit hard to see in 80px X 80px bit I've been able to kinda merge Gil's and my theme for this one (sort of).

This is me kicking back on the side of a Bell UH-1 Iroquois, commonly known as the "Huey" by both US and Aussie troops, I'm sure you've all seen one before if you've seen -any- Vietnam war movie, but if not, it was a multipurpose military helicopter, famous for its use in the Vietnam War.

I have my arm draped casually over the door mounted M134 Minigun. Made by G.E., the "minigun" was a scaled down version of the M61 Vulcan canon. Whereas the Vulcan fired enormous 20mm rounds at up to 6600 rounds per minute, the "Minigun" used the same 7.62x51 rounds as the M60 and M14 and spat them out at around 4000RPM.

For me, getting to sit inside one of these aircraft was quite a moment, as not only do I have a fascination for military equipment, but my Uncle told me about being flown around in exactly this kind of chopper during the Vietnam war.

The pic was taken in Saigon at The Museum of American War Atrocities (yes, thats really what it's called)

If your interested the full size pics are here (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/150/390970324_4bfd81b63a_o.jpg) and here (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1324/816921381_1a7dfd2e3f_o.jpg)

We sure did mate. Stories for another time and place, but my traveling mates don't really go for the package tour kind of deal. We tend to just rock up to a place and take it from there. In that trip we went to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and just let fate deliver us a series of adventures. Sure it's dangerous and stressful at times, but when you make it out the other end in one piece, reflecting on the journey makes it all worthwhile.

Yeah I'd have been surprised if there were many people of our age in the US or Aus who hadn't heard of the Huey.

I've been in a couple of commercial choppers, but sadly the one in the pic is decommissioned. (read, hauled out of the jungle)

So Spud, have you read the book Chickenhawk? If not I strongly urge you to grab a copy. It's an excellent book. Check this (http://www.amazon.com/Chickenhawk-Robert-Mason/dp/0143035711/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234496973&sr=8-1) out.

Yeah, my uncle served in the Australian Infantry there and he's only said a few things here and there, and for the last 10 years or so, refuses to speak of it at all. I know enough from him and his father (A WW2 vet who has some pretty hard core stories himself after being stationed in New Guinea in WW2) though, that he experienced things I don't need to know about.

My brother showed me hundreds of photos from the air of Desert Storm. I'll bet most Americans have no idea of the devastation.

I'll bet your right. I've done a bit of research on the role of the media in conflict and it's fairly widely accepted that the USA in particular "learned their lesson" about controlling the media after Vietnam.

On the subject of devastation though, I've been to Hiroshima and stood right under ground zero. It's a thriving city with a giant green park in the middle these days, but a trip to the museum in Peace Park is a soul wrenching experience to say the least. Surprisingly (to me anyway) one of the things that adds to the intense emotion is the fact that the story is told with no bias at all. I find that kind of honorable actually.

I've been to the Killing Fields and detention centers in Cambodia too, but thats a hot button topic for me. The more I witness global politics and read up on the history of Asia the more I'm disgusted that nobody stood up to the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot until he'd exterminated around a quarter of the population and sent their country back to the stone age. Even then it was their neighbors the Vietnamese who intervened "in self defense" and got the attention (eventually) of the UN.

Today we going for a shot of 2 T-33 Shooting Star Trainers. These are the 2 T-33s that belonged to the 49th FIS. Every Fighter Sqadron in the 50s, 60s, 70, and even into the 80s had at least one, if not more of the T-33s. The US Navy even had a model of the T-33 called the T2V-1/T-1A SeaStar that was carrier-capable. Over 30 nations have used T-33s or one of variants.

You can read more about the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-33_Shooting_Star)

This was the first jet fighter type aircraft that I got a flight in. I won a flight by leading a team of Armament & Electronic (A&E) types in supporting the mission of the squadron for a particular month with the best score in a series of tests. It was a great experience - not as good as the flight in an F-101B that I got a year later, but it was a pretty intense ride. We got up to just over 500 MPH - I remember this because the pilot made sure that I knew it both in the air and after we landed. The pilot even let me handle her for a few minutes - he was impressed that I didn't loose control of the aircraft, which 2 of the previous winners of the free ride had - she needed a light touch on the controls.

You know the drill now.

Now we go for some very special patches. These were worn by the crew of the F101 Voodoo and her ground crew. The original artist is lost to us (at least to my research).

The F-101s came in various models. Some were single seaters, the ones I worked on were F-101Bs and F-101Fs. The latter being the trainer or two sets of flight controls. However, the F-101Fs were fully functional, they carried the same equipment as the B-model, and the same armament. The only real difference was the extra set of flight controls in the rear seat.

The first one up is the patch worn by the pilots - and it's a very nice one.

This one is the patch that the F-101B/F Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) wore. In the RCAF, they were called Navigators, but they performed the same duties - they both navigated the plane and controlled the radar and infra-red sensors, and interfaced with the NORAD SAGE System (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) - more about SAGE in future postings. The RIOs were called other things, depending on how good they were - Scope Dope was one, as was The Guy in the Back

Today we have F-101B number 58-0412 in flight. This was taken before the upgrades were done that introduced an Infra-Red (IR) on-board sensor and many modifications to the MG-13 Automatic Weapons Control System (AWCS). The F-101s had inflight refueling capabilities that were removed in order to put the IR sensor on the plane. And this plane flew with the 49th FIS too.

I was a huge Femmes fan, though I was in college. We played that thing all the time. I still love it. Good choice!

Here is my Violent Femmes thread including some more vids. Interesting, the first one that came to mind as I read your post is the first vid in my thread.

Today's album, one of the most influential albums of my life. Aside from the Ramones, this was one of the most listened to albums of my high school life and one that had a huge impact on me.

Another day, and we get another avatar.

This is the patch for the 134 FIS that was based at the Burlington International Airport in Vermont. They were equipped with F-102s. We performed many practice bugout missions - we would fly out of Rome, NY and fly off to Buffalo, or Burlington, or to Maine - we even did cross border ones into Canada. The CF-101s of the RCAF visited us many times.

http://www.thefret.net/imagehosting/323249a223c4ce859.png

The Handle for the 134 FIS was The Green Mountain Boys. We spent a lot of time at Burlington before they were fully equipped with F-102s in 1965.

Yesterday you saw the patch for the 134 FIS, well here is one of their F-102s landing at Burlington. The same Automatic Weapons Control System (AWCS) was used in the F-102s as the F-101s used. It was designated the MG-13 - designed and built by Hughes. This fact actually made it easy to deploy either fighter type to another squadron for short amounts of time - they even fired the same type of Falcon air-to-air guided missles.

This one is for the 4713th Defense System Evaluation Squadron, which carried the handle The Roving Ravens. They were stationed at Stewart AFB, just outside of Newburgh, NY. They flew the EB-57 Canberra which were the primary targets that most ADC squadrons flew against to practice intercepts.

Today we have the EB-57 Canbarra which were the primary targets that most ADC squadrons flew against. They carried lots of electronic equipment to both simulate bomber targets, but could also interfere with both communications and radar equipment, just as if they were a real enemy plane. In rare cases, the F-101s would go up against SAC B-58 Hustlers to practice against very high-speed aircraft.

I know I sure did!

And R of G, whilst I already have a lot of the albums you've listed, I'm a big punk fan myself, even seen a few of them live (which is no mean feat in Australia haha. I actually broke my back stage diving at a Bad Brains gig!!) I might have added a Misfits album in there though, and maybe Subhumans and Exploited also, but I'd -definitely- have thrown in (I'm) Stranded by the Saints! Aussie punk at it's most legendary, and they come from my home town!!!

Regardless, I have the remaining few albums you listed scribbled down in my wallet for next time I'm in a record store. Awesome posting mate :AOK:

Thanks. Had the month been a longer one than February, the Saints album definitely would have made it, as would Oz's other great punk band Radio Birdman (I love Radios Appear). I love both of those bands. The Misfits I never particularly cared for all that much. :D

Actually I'm blaming it on the red wine that I left Radio Birdman off my reply!!

If nothing else they had possibly the coolest band logo ever, but tell me "Aloha Steve and Dano" isn't one of the greatest songs of the era!

Misfits wise, I'm one of the very small percentage of Misfits fans that prefers Michale Graves to Glenn Danzig on vocals. I dig some of their old stuff of course, but I really liked what they did with the new guy.
