The world is full of weird connections.

Our hobby band decided to give Elvis Costello and the Attractions' "Pump It Up" a try. If you know the song you will know that what makes this song is the bass line played by Bruce Thomas of the Attractions. The last week or so I worked on learning the bass line, because I want to learn how to play it and also to help our bass player. I also did some Google searches about Bruce Thomas, one thing I was looking to find out is whether he plays bass with his fingers or with a pick. And that's when I found out this weird connection that ties back to Jimi's post that started this thread:

Bruce Thomas is into martial arts and wrote a biography on Bruce Lee

Today's album is Wire's Pink Flag. Here is one of my favorite songs from that album, "1 2 X U"...

I got into Wire during the 80s and had 3 vinyl albums. About 12 years ago I actually paid someone to convert one of the vinyls to CD format because I could not find a CD release for it. I have to dig that CD out to give it a fresh listen.

In the 1980s I also saw Wire in concert, the one thing I really, really remember is this. There was an opening band with their full complement of instruments and a pretty standard, elaborate drumset. The opening band got done and the roadies came out to set up for Wire. They removed the full drumset and replaced it with the most minimalist drumset I've ever seen. I don't know about drumming but I think it had one tom, one snare, one cymbal and a bass drum. But when Wire came on the drummer just blew everyone away. That was a memorable concert.

R_of_G
February 10th, 2009, 11:43 AM
I also have some Wire on vinyl still (Pink Flag, 154 and Chairs Missing). I converted them to cd when I worked at a radio station, along with a ton of my other vinyl. I like listening to it with all the pops and hisses where I remember them from when I listened to the albums every day as a teenager. I love vinyl.

I am quite jealous that you got to actually see them play. I can't even imagine how cool that was. They epitomize "more with less" for me.

Wire played in a small venue. It was just an empty room with a stage which is about 1 foot off the floor. There was no seating so the crowd just stood. I remembered the crowd of maybe 150 people and I stood within 15-20 feet of the stage the whole concert. The band must have been using midi or something because I distinctly remembered that there were sounds coming from the stage even when nobody seem to be playing their instruments. They sounded amazing!

...I distinctly remembered that there were sounds coming from the stage even when nobody seem to be playing their instruments. They sounded amazing!

They were definitely always a step ahead of the game. They were what became known as "post-punk" when the first post-Pistols wave of UK punk was still going strong. It's probably why they outlasted just about all of their contemporaries. From what I've read, by the time they finished recording one album, they were already tired of playing everything on it and were gung ho to figure out another new direction for the music. Innovators for sure.

It's probably been a good 15 years since I last listened to SLF. I had the first album (the one with the letter of rejection from the record co. printed on the back) and I think it was The Peel Sessions. The music still holds up some 30 odd years on.

It definitely still holds up, at least musically. Some of the lyrics about "the Troubles" are a bit specific to the time period, but musically, it works as well as ever.

And speaking of things that still hold up thirty years later, here is today's video...

You mean, like this?

I can't really say the fan didn't get what he deserved. You hit the singer, you can't be all that shocked when the singer hits you back, and when that singer is Henry you can consider yourself lucky to still be conscious when he's done hitting you.

If you don't have a CD, but are interested in hearing more- get "My Aim Is True" his debut album.

Here is another one. It shows the first of the two alfas I have owned. This type was my post college car. Mine looked very much like the silver one that shows up pretty soon in the vid. The cool thing about it, besides the 50/50 weight distribution and fun performance and handling, was that the tach was the only dial in front of you.
