So my dad recently asked for the mandolin I borrowed off him years ago back. I didn't have any use for it anyhow, except for a song that I want the recorded version of to have mando on it (to get a Celtic feel).

So I recently stumbled on a cheapo electric-acoustic Oscar Schmidt/Washburn OM-10E "Faith" mando on my local Craigslist. The "Faith" is apparently something they marketed to church players because it's white and they put a "fish" symbol on the headstock. There's a regular version in sunburst without the fish, but this one was the "Faith" version. The pickup is in the bridge, and not visible.

Here's a stock pic from a music store site:

For some reason the one for sale was missing the pickguard, which is really no big whup to me. Everything works, so I went ahead and bought it. The seller threw in a strap. No case. $85 USD.

The current version of the OM -10E, a sunburst with the pickup on the top and visible, is streeting for $199 to $240 USD, so I figure I got a pretty decent deal.

What sayest thou?

Also, Pastor Arnold, what about me playing this thing in a bar gig? Should I cover up the fish? Obviously, I personally have no problem with the fish, as I'm a church-goer and church player. But should an instrument with the fish symbol be played in a bar (there's at least one song my side band does that'd sound great with a mandolin-- the kicker is , the song pokes fun at fundamentalism) or should I cover it up for that? My personal take is that doing that would be "hiding my light under a bushel basket" but since my function in a purely secular roots rock band isn't really to witness anyhow, I can see other viewpoints as valid.

PS-- if this last paragraph gets into improper "religion" territory, just pm me.

Hmm, I am not sure what to advise on the fish symbol. I say go with your gut! I like the fundamentalism song. A guy can have faith and still enjoy that song.

I wouldn't cover it up- when it comes down to it, it's part of you and your beliefs, and there's no reason to. Plus, it's pretty neat.
Nice mando! I never knew these things could be as much fun, I'm having a blast with mine.

Nice goin', krashpad. :AOK: You snagged a very decent a/e mando for a great price. Play it well!;)

The 'Faith' white finish is still marketed, one of 3 finishes for the OM10E.
Oscar Schmidt OM10 and OM10E (http://www.oscarschmidt.com/products/acoustics/om10.asp)

BTW: OS also has a 'Faith' finish option with their OG10CE, a smaller/thinner bodied ('concert size') a/e 6-string guitar in approx. the same price range as your new mando.

OG10CE (http://www.oscarschmidt.com/products/acoustics/og10ce.asp)

My local Wash/OS dealer sells these 2 pretty regularly.

He also gets the 'Faith' finished concert-size Uke, (not a/e) from time to time:

OU3 (http://www.oscarschmidt.com/products/ukes/ou3.asp)

You're very welcome, kp.

I had the 'secular' finish versions of the OM10E and the OU3 Uke. They got me started in my mando & uke adventures and led me to GAS for upgrades.

I thought that the many worship group players here might find the OS Faith models of interest as inexpensive yet very decent instro options to embellish their ministry work.

Just keep a balance. Dress all in black and wear a pentagram medallion.

Haha, well, I have lotsa black clothes. But the closest I'll get to a pentagram is a star:

Krash: Well, if Tony Iommi can have cross inlays . . .

I see no reason to cover it up.

Haha, good point. It's actually not all that easy to see from a distance anyhow, since it's a light gray on white. I'm sure that some scenester types who don't know me will assume it's intention is ironic anyhow, when in fact there really is no intention, since this was the only version available from this seller.

Not that I have anything against the symbol, obviously. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to play it in church also.

Cool Mandolin!

I've been playing the heck out of the Mandolin that I recently got. I had a pickup installed into it and I also had the frets leveled so that it plays great all the way up the neck. I'm having a blast learning to play some things on it.

I'm wondering how it will affect my guitar playing. It can't hurt. I'm sure that it will help my picking technique to some extent.

However, if at any point you play "Mandolin Rain," I reserve the right to break it over your head :)

How about "Mandolin Wind" by Rod the Mod? Or "Mandocello" by Cheap Trick?

Thanks Warren. Yeah, I'ma leave it as is, I'm sure some people will have a problem with it, but that's OK.
