Gotta love those Plain tops. I almost bought an R8, that looked very similar to that one. The one I was looking at had a really fat neck. What is the weight on that one? Bet she sounds cool through that Marshall. There is just something about an LP through a Marshall.
This is the one.

I should look him up again. It was a pretty good price. Maybe he would like to trade for a pristine Goldtop Classic. LOL
At the time I was not a big fan of the large 50s neck. The R8 seems to have an even fatter neck than the fifties neck on the standards.
But I just love those plain tops. Notice the top wrap on the stop tailpiece. This guys does all his guitars vintage style.

So what benefit do you get from wrapping the strings like this?

Top Wrap is supposed to give more sustain. I think it is a throwback to the days when all they had was Compensated Bridge stop tailpieces. These were before the days of the adjustable bridge. My early Gibby SG has this.

I kinda always liked the '58s more. But I wouldn't snuff a nice '59...even an R9!

the first person I encountered with an LP had one just like that(first photo) and he could play it really good too.doubt that wrap was on it though.
