Spur of the moment/all rather unplanned, but I happened to be looking at used Epiphone G-400's on eBay, put a fairly low last second bid in on one, and got it for a mere $202.50. Always admired them ever since EC had that fancy painted one (http://guitarheroesgear.blogspot.com/2009/02/eric-claptons-gibson-1964-sg-fools.html) when he was in Cream. The ones I've played I've liked quite a bit. Seemed worth the gamble, so it's New Used Guitar Day for ol' DVM:

Nice snag.
(Heh-heh... seems there's "some light scratching on the pickguard".)
Oh, well... enjoy it if you can overlook that.

Congrats. I love SGs. They are a very versatile guitar. I had an SG Standard about six years ago and regret getting rid of it.

That's a pretty righteous price. Good job. I'd love to hear what it sounds like after you get it (before the mods).

Hey, I think I found the perfect "grippy strap" material. It even comes in just about the right width:

OK, how about a little Angus Young?

How about some Ollie Halsall? Or some Gary Louris (Jayhawks)? Early Mike Oldfield? All fine SG players.

Wasn't FZ's SG one that had been heavily modified by/for Jerry Garcia?

Nice DVM! Congrats!

I am loving my G-400 that I got a couple of weeks ago.

First song I've worked on with it-Sunshine of My Love by Cream. The video of them playing it is just awesome! One of the cooler songs from that era IMHO and I'm not even a true blues/classic rock guy.

On the Black Sabbath note----I believe all SG's come with fine print somewhere beneath the pick guard that says you must play at least the main riff of Iron Man or your soul will in fact belong to the devil. :flamemad: Just what I've heard....

Lookee what showed up on the front porch today:

It's in real nice shape, considering it's an '00. Two smallish dents, one on the front, one on the back, neither of them through the finish. Neck is straight & true, hardware is in good shape, and no controls issues that I can see/hear. Nice low action, no fret issues, and the intonation is good. Plays great. The pickups are adequate, but no better. The bridge sounds pretty good, but the neck is rather dull sounding. I really like the vintage style tuners, and they seem to hold tune quite well. Just put on a set of new strings and away we went.

The one thing that's going to take some time to get used to is having so much neck above the body. I never had a git where the neck joined the body at the 22nd fret!! As I was playing it last night, my left hand kept going to where it thought the 12th fret should be and ending up around the 15th or 16th!

I know what you mean. :)

I used to have an SG faded which was a fine guitar but being used to strats the SG throws me off. Either I get used to the SG or keep the strats.

I kept the strats. :whatever:

The more I play this guitar, the more I like it. The only part of the guitar that I'm really disappointed with is the neck 'bucker, which is very dull & characterless sounding. Not a surprise, though--I read this criticism in a number of reviews and the comments were right on the money. The bridge 'bucker is pretty good, though. Through a good OD pedal (I have several! ;) ) or with the gain up on my Egnater Rebel head, the guitar is an absolute crunch machine.

But it's gonna get even better! Mudcat & I cut a little barter deal--a BYOC ping-pong/digital echo pedal in return for a Gibson 490R/498T humbucker pair. That's the stock pickup pair in most Gibson SG Standards and should transform this puppy into a WSD! (Weapon of Sonic Destruction) Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!! :dude:

I'll post a proper review once I get the new p'ups in it....

I sold mine on flea-bay for $350 about 18 months ago, so I would say that is a hell of a deal.
