what are the advantages of an external EQ on your pedalboard and what are the drawbacks?
i know you can probably dial in your tone better, but can you use them to get some extra mids, low ends and highs?

Yes.
Some use them for a mid-boost for solos. Some use them to scoop the mids for heavy chuggin'. I use mine to tame on-stage feedback frequencies and beef up the tone of the piezos in my acoustic.

I've used an MXR 10-Band at the front end for years. Besides the uses that t_ross33 points out, you can get humbuckers to simulate single coils and vice versa.
IMHO, there are no disadvantages; it's a must, a swiss-army knife of tone.
