Saw him in a crap-hole bar in Wichita, KS back in the 80s when I was in college. In fact one of my college instructors, who was a Mississippi Delta style player, convinced me to cut class and go see him. There were like 20 people in the bar, half of whom were playing pool and completely oblivious. :thwap

He put on a great show.

Sound like an awesome educational experience in and of itself. I'm only first getting into his music recently, but it's becoming quickly addictive.

I usually have music on in my office all day, which can be heard throughout my secondhand shop. There's a big variety, but mostly nothing people expect to hear in a little village. The only music I overhear in public around here is country or sometimes current pop.

I listen to a lot of blues and T. Rex!

Decided to go back and listen to the first 4 albums from The Police. I forgot how much of an influence Andy Summers' riffs and rhythms were for me. These 4 albums covered my high school days. (I think I sported every haircut seen on the first 3 album covers either intentionally or otherwise!)

Though I do love Cline, Wilco has never really been my thing. Not that his playing is any less awesome than ever.

I actually prefer his more "outside" playing, having first heard of Cline through his work with former Minutemen bass player Mike Watt in their band Banyan (which also included drummer Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction).

So far I like it. I've given 'All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone' a straight run-through this morning and there's some cool stuff here. I'll need to give it a few more listens before I really form an opinion . . . what stands out the most, so far, is that I really, really like the drum sounds - I mean the way the drums are recorded and how they sit in the mix. It adds a lot. Of course there are a thousand great guitar sounds happening too - and I always appreciate that!

I agree. It'd be very easy for a drummer to get kind of lost in that wash of guitar sounds, but between what he plays and the way it's mixed, it works perfectly, adding to the rather cinematic feel of much of their work.

Hey Tig....that is a season of a career. It's relevant....but it's the exception not the rule. One of the appealing things about Wilco is that they are not determined to stick to a formula, but to evolve and bring you along for the ride. Of course, that means there may be some things that don't appeal to everyone.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a watershed moment for them, musically unlike anything before or since, destroyed the band, personnel wise, got them tossed from there label, then went on to be the most commercially succesful album to date, in large part because everyone wanted to know what all the scandal and strife was all about. They put out another very different album, then that tour. Kicking television encompassed alot of the noise stuff from YHF, and also was the coming out party of a new lineup. They were trying to figure a lot out at that point.

Not sure why that (KT) was what you elected to immerse yourself in first, but ask 8 fans for which album, you'll likely get 8 different answers. My vote, if you had to pick one for an intro, would be for Being There. AM is great, much closer to the Alt Country booze infused raucous of Uncle Tupelo, but Being There I think is when Tweedy really started to show what he was capable of. Their latest (Wilco - the album) is nothing like any of the others. This makes for a great live show, by the way, and the best way to see what people love about them.

Prine is such a great songwriter and singer. I've been a fan for a long time.

Also, nice call on the Matthew Sweet. Robert Quine's solo on the title track is one of my favorites of his, perhaps behind only the one he did on Lou Reed's "Waves of Fear."

Excellent album. Recorded at the height of his first career (before he descended and became a drug-addled junkie).

You're also in an Old Town mood, Earle, as well as Prine, learned there craft there.

Well, I was attempting to post about an excellent new release from the Miles Davis catalog, but I'm running up against the built-in "naughty langauge editor" in the site software.

Apparently, it takes offense to the name Miles gave to his landmark groundbreaking 1970 recording. You know, the one that rhymes with "Witches Brew."

Of course, had I used the actual title, it would have forced and edit to *****es Brew, and well, that's just silly.

Sillier still is that I noticed it when it didn't post the picture of the album cover because the link to the picture has the name of the album in it and the software editor overrode that, effectively killing the link which doesn't refer to an item named *****es Brew.

I'm all for this being a friendly site, but this is a case where the automated editor's lack of context is counter-productive.

Anyway, there's a new release comprising Miles' performances at the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. It's an interesting look at the historical shift in Miles' music with the first performance coming shortly before the recording of the album with the naughty name and the second four months after.

From Amazon.com:

The Majestic Silver Strings is Buddy's reimagination of classic country songs with unrestrained guitars, atmosphere and attitude. Buddy and the three acclaimed guitarists Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot and Greg Leisz (together they are The Majestic Silver Strings) together push each song into a new cosmos warped in reverb. Guest vocalists include Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Chocolate Genius and Julie Miller.

Yeah, those guys and the Budos Band make for a take-no-prisoners soul/funk set with plenty of rock sensibility.

I learned "Can You Get To That?" last summer when I got the Sleigh Bells album and heard this and remembered what a sweet little guitar groove that song is built around. So good they built an entire other song around it...

10 Days Out (Blues from the Backroads)
This back to the roots of blues collection has Kenny supporting the last of the old bluesmen/women. This is the real thing, not the typical white boy plays the blues-rock album. It is easily one of the best blues albums I've ever listened to.
Usually these kind of albums don't quite work, but that's certainly not the case here. I understand the DVD is a must-see.

5. "Tina Marie" Bryan Lee/Shepherd
6. "Born in Louisiana" Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown/Shepherd

DIG this! Vocals! power pop! guitar hooks! Matthew Sweet without the narcissism? I dunno, I've know of them for less than ten minutes. Looks like nothing since '08. Did the bloom of genius destroy them?

I've only known them ten minutes of so longer than that. Found them via this link to free streaming of a song from their forthcoming EP.

I haven't really put a finger on exactly what their sound is, but I like most of it. It's definitely catchy.

You know, if Bloodletting had been released within the last two years, it probably would have been much more commercially successful due to all the Twilight-inspired vampire books. I read Publisher's Weekly as part of my job and there are at least 5 or so vampire books that come out every week. :rollover

The Lightin' Hopkins marker was put in place just last November. One man spent lots of time to get it, but I forgot the name.

Ah, it was down at the Balinese!
Story time: My grandfather spent some time as a chauffeur way back in the wild days of Galveston. 20's and 30's I think. He would drive hot shot Hollywood types, politicians, etc., down to Galveston for gambling and Post Office Street, the then row of ho-houses. The local cops were on the take, and when the state police tried to bust the Balinese Room, they had the room flipped with hidden tables, just like you see in the movies! The pier was long enough for the operators to clean up before the cops got there. Finally, the state police managed to shut it down. It was sad to see it wiped out by Hurricane Ike. I used to surf there occasionally.
http://bestgalvestonrentals.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Balinese-Room-stars-SA.1.jpg

Today:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0c/BalineseRoomPostIkePaul.jpg/750px-BalineseRoomPostIkePaul.jpg

My Dad and his buddies would drive down to Post Office Street as teens. They didn't have enough money for any "purchases", but enjoyed it when the ladies would whistle at them from the porches. :drool This was in the early 50's. Later, my Dad even sang (he was a jazz singer) in one of the houses for a few bucks, but never got to take it out in trade like any healthy teen boy would want.

For some reason the group name made me think this would be punk rock, maybe it's the Epitaph label. At any rate I have a love/hate thing with indie, which this is, but damn I love this album. Indie that veers between country-rock and power pop, with lyrics that skirt being too precious but with enough humor to save them. And the music is just damn gorgeous. I even like the They Might Be Giants-like declarative singing style.

While looking for the above graphic, I found that Pitchfork found the album meh. Are they always that wrong?

Simply, wow.
Available from Haynes' store (http://warrenhaynes.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?pc=HADD060902).
Once in a lifetime! Pre-Mule set, those in attendance at Red Rocks tonight were treated to an unbelievable set of acoustic music from Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes. “Rare” does not aptly describe this night, nor does brilliant, moving, soulful; or any other adjective one can conjure. Midnight Rider was the first dish served and was followed by Come & Go Blues. Old Before My Time and Come On In To My Kitchen both raised the hair on the back of my neck as well as many others' too. Beautiful in its simplicity and stirring in its power, this set is truly one of the highlights of both Messrs. Haynes' and Allman's career.

Wow, this is much better than I expected. We get to really hear Setzer unleash his playing skills and creativity. He manages to use jazz chords, sometimes finger picked, over songs that until now were considered country or blue grass. There is plenty of variety in the songs and styles played. Any guitar player who enjoys listening to the upper end of the skill spectrum should dig this release. Grammy winner potential is very high.

Cool! I remember my Dad had a few of his albums, but forgot which ones.
I'm thinking of getting this one:

It's a really good album, Kat. I think you'll dig it if you like other Bodom stuff. :dude

I have that one as well. It's a very solid anthology with all of the signature songs and a lot of other great ones. Took over the music for most of the day at a friend's BBQ today and got in several of Fess' songs.

NP:

Albert Ayler - "Down by the Riverside" (Take 6) from the Goin' Home album.

Found some old piano sheet music for it in a bunch of old piano stuff in a box here and I am about to attempt to figure out an arrangement for solo guitar.

I do not read music but I'm about to try to learn (again).

One way or the other, I'm figuring out this melody tonight.

In honor of the passing of Cornell Dupree, guitar legend.
Dupree's funk and soul mastery is all over this album.
