I've had The Czars on all day. They made 3 GREAT CDs:

Before...But Longer

The Ugly People vs The Beautiful People

Goodbye

From 2000 - 2004. One of the most criminally overlooked groups ever! Vocals, musicianship, arrangements, production to die for! Kind of a cross between The Left Banke, Procol Harum and The Flaming Lips. Baroque flavored, keyboard-based ballad-pop w gnarly guitars thrown on to great effect, as well as trumpet, cello, flute...sometimes acoustic, sometimes hugely processed, sometimes both combined for a very heady brew! Truly great stuff! :bravo:

I remember the day he died. His death seems to be clouded in mystery. His family wouldn't divulge the details, although (I'm not trying to be funny here) considering his condition at the time, I guess suicide can be ruled out.
I have a 3 CD boxset of his work from The Impressions days up to the last album before his accident.

Yeah, Budos Band II is a great album. Mas o Menos is probably my fav track.

And I like E.I.T.S's "Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever". I kinda wish they'd evolved a bit more musically though, they seem to be stuck in archetypal-post-rock-outfit mode.

Yeah, Budos Band II is a great album. Mas o Menos is probably my fav track.

They're one of the few bands I can honestly say that I love every track they've done so far. Granted, it's only two albums, but still, they've got a 100% success rate with me so far. Hands down, my favorite so far is "Aynotchesh Yererfu" from the first album. One of the things that sets the Budos Band apart from a lot of other afro-funk bands are the brilliant melodic sensibilities of their horn section. That song is one where it's the most evident. I've often said, if I were a character in an action film, that song would be what plays when my character comes on screen to kick some butt.

I can't wait for the new EP on the 23rd. If it's anything like the first two albums, expect to see it posted in this thread a lot in the weeks to come.

I also agree with you about wanting to see EITS expand their sound, but I do enjoy what they've done so far even if it's fairly similar from album to album.

It's nice to know someone who knows who Budos Band and EITS are. :D

Hmm. The only song that screams "poppy" is "United" to me which sounds tough in the verses but the chorus is lamentable. "Hell Bent for Leather" is a good one too, although I lean towards "Defenders of the Faith" otherwise. "The Sentinel" is one of my favorite Priest songs. It makes me want to break things.

The big thing I've noticed thus far is that while the songs themselves don't sound like Van Halen, Sammy Hagar singing with Michael Anthony certainly does bring back memories of that. The solo work sounds like Satch, absolutely nothing like Eddie. I'm enjoying it thus far.

Keb' Mo' - Keb' Mo'

Robben Ford & The Blue Line - Mystic Mile

Jimi Hendrix - Blues

Buddy Guy - Damn Right I Got The Blues

I load my 5-disc CD player w my programming for each day. :)

I simply abhor downloads and MP3s and all that stuff! Running CD stores, and the "holdit in your hand" CD experience out of business! Browsing CD stores, and, before that, vinyl LPs, was all a HUGE part of the music buying experience...the fun, the enjoyment! Aw, shucks! :thwap:

I love to buy CD's, (for something I really like, I would rather get the CD than download), but then I rip them into my computer, and play music through it (in a few months when the room with the stereo in it is remodeled) or for now from my ipod into my stereo. Then I don't have to carry all that stuff. We still have a CD changer but rarely use it now. Not having the CD's out preserves them from my little kids' abuse.

Right now, I am going completely digital and streaming the Pandora station discussed here: http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=11897

Well, I know you once ran a music store so I understand your take on this. Remember there's also the side of the recording industry artificially inflating CD prices (in a move that can only be described as "contempt of Congress") while simultaneously giving less to the artist that recorded the music in the first place.

I live in a small town. There is no place to buy CDs within about a 25 minute drive. None. Zero. So to buy a CD I need to make a 60 mile round trip--adds up with gas approaching $3 again. Plus, try finding a Joe Bonamassa CD within tactical nuclear weapon distance of here. Good luck! There's one store (a Barnes and Noble) that had one Bonamassa CD. One. His "Live from Nowhere in Particular." Too bad I was looking for another one. The only way I could get "Sloe Gin" was to pay $20 to get it at his concert. Expensive, yes, but at least the money was going directly to him.

With Amazon I can get the stuff I want quickly, cheaply, easily, and legally. I'm buying more music this way. Why the heck would I want to waste my time driving or using some Torrent of a questionable nature (and dubious legality) when I can get it this way? Plus the reality of digital delivery systems means that artists can go more directly to the fans. They don't need the RIAA anymore. That's a good thing. Hopefully that means more good music instead of just rafts of dreck trying to ride the latest trend.

bigG
June 6th, 2009, 10:48 AM
I should start a new Thread about this, but I'd certainly be in a very small minority here. :)

Here goes: this is the first time in the history of recorded music that the pursuit of ever higher fidelity has not been the goal! (Overlooking the dreaded 8-track, audio cassettes and quadrophonic debacles, all of which died off.) SACD, and to a lesser extent, DVD-A, were a huge step in the right direction, but were buried, with honors, by the seeming preference of the music-buying public for convenience over high(er) fidelity!

That convenience trumps quality when it comes to musical fidelity seems heresy to me! For background music lovers, I can understand. But for those many audiophiles among us music lovers, the squashed, lo-fi sound of downloads and MP3s and their ilk is pure blasphemy!

I have been an audiophile since the late 60s, and I have a HUGE stereo set-up, purchased at a huge price (and many before my current one) that gives me hours of aural pleasure almost daily, whether CD, LP, or SACD, as has been the case for many, many years. Nothing beats parking yourself in the "sweet spot" and letting the great music on a great sound system take you away!

Sad to say that I have all but given up on CD/LP shopping in brick and mortar stores, as the selection gets thinner and thinner thanks to downloads and MP3s and ipods and yourpods and blackberries and raspberries and cell phones, and gawd knows what else! I don't own any of 'em, and doubt I ever will.

Glad to say that I have such a huge collection of LPs, CDs and SACDs that I'm pretty much covered in having most all the music I love already in hand - from classical to blues to jazz to rock, and anything and everything inbetween. My tastes are eclectic and widespread, thank goodness!

I also have a HUGE home theatre set-up that cost huge $, and I see these adds for the Bose Wavelength or Waveform or whatever it's called, and I just laugh and cry at the same time. These people have never heard a good, much less GREAT home theatre set-up! Or they certainly wouldn't be so blown away by that simple, silly little box! (That's WAY over-priced, btw!)

It seems to me that going from hi-fidelity, in all its glory, to lo-fi downloads and MP3s is analogous to going from a Les Paul or a Strat thru a Marshall or a Vox to a Sears Silvertone guitar thru a Sears Silvertone combo amp w paper-thin speakers...Surely you can understand that analogy!

End of rant. Not telling anyone what they "should" like, just expressing MY opinion as to the state of recorded music as it exists today for the seemingly ever-growing bulk of music listeners. *whew* and :thwap:

Marnold, I suffer the same lack of buying options. The only place around here to buy CD's is Starbucks. What a laugh! And if I drive to Twin Falls, an hour and a half away, I have only Target and Walmart type options pretty much. I tried to find "The Wall" down there, and couldn't! So I guess I have to Amazon it, or wait until our vacation to the Seattle area. The question I face with Amazon is am I going to download (from there or iTunes depending), or do I order the CD so I can get the stuff that goes with it. I do love album art, liner notes, etc.

Oh yeah, right now I am listening to Jeff Beck, She's A Woman, on Pandora. P.S. I wouldn't mind a new thread on this BigG. I find it interesting.

Sure BG, when I get off on a tangent, and want to take it to a new thread, I generally hit the quote button on my post, then cut or copy the quote, then migrate over and start the new thread and paste the quote in, generally with an explanation, and start the new thread. If I have more than one post to bring over, I use the quote and edit features and copy and paste away. I often, but not always, use two browser windows to do this. Whether I delete the original post depends on how badly I diverted the thread. In a case like this, I am not sure it is necessary. It is only a coupla posts and we are moving on to a new thread.

I was going to PM you this, but thought other members might get some benefit out of seeing it too. See you over in your new thread, I am quite interested in the discussion, but a while later. I have to go do some work now.

I view The Final Cut more as Roger's first solo album than I do a Pink Floyd album. That's not really a criticism as I quite like Roger's solo work. It just sounds much more like what he did after than much that he did with the Floyd.

NP:

Pixies - Surfer Rosa

I would post the album cover but it has bare boob and this is a family friendly forum. If you want to see the cover (and the boobage), Google Image Search for it. :D

It'd be easy to dismiss Fozzy as a Chris Jericho vanity project, but "All That Remains" is actually a really good hard rock/metal album. My only complaint is that the mix sounds over-compressed like Metallica's "Death Magnetic."

I would agree with that assessment. Gilmour sounds awesome on this album as always, but at the same there is a slight feeling that he was just phoning it in. By this time Gilmour and Waters hated each other, right?

I believe that's correct. I've read that Gilmour wasn't particularly thrilled with the touring for the Wall because the stage show was so orchestrated that it required the band to play the songs more or less the same way every night so the timing of the show would match up. This meant Gilmour had very little freedom in his soloing. His work on The Final Cut is still great because he's the consummate professional. He gave Roger what he wanted but it seemed he was more of a hired hand than a true collaborator at that point.

Hey if anyone can find this song on the internet please post it. I could not find that song, but plugged Boney James into Pandora, and it played a song off of Send One Your Love, by him.

EDIT: I just found a short clip of Boneyizm on iTunes. It sounds a little less like Klemmer, at least based on the clip, but still in the same ball park. I may pick some of this stuff up. I enjoy my jazz and actually really got into fusion in high school and college. Didn't hurt me a bit!

The Very Best of Moby Grape - Vintage

I have all two of their albums on vinyl from the 60s. ;) This was released in 1993. A two-disc CD set including both studio albums, plus a bunch of demos and live cuts...

Sadly overlooked, and imploding from drugs and mental illness early on, this is one of the BEST bands I bet most of you have never heard of. Three guitar players (acoustic and electric) w that rockin' San Fran sound, rounded out w alot of prescient alt-country leanings, superb guitar duels, and melt like butter harmonies. Catch 'em if you can, on CD, MP3...any medium. Highly recommended! :AOK:

_______

Just went to youtube, and I'll be darned if there aren't some Moby Grape vids (some audio only) on there! Here's a great blues tune. The Grape doing Miller's Blues:

One of my all-time favorite songs by anyone. I give you "8:05" :

I also possibly figured out why there are days certain guitars sound better than others (comparing ones you own). I think it has something to do with the music you listened to that day. Well, I wish that was true. :)
To be honest, I indulge in more than my share of ear candy as well.

When I was a young kid, my father's record collection totalled about 2 albums/5 LPs (seriously). One was a 4-LP Ray Charles box set and the other was Ravi Shankar live in San Francisco. I developed an interest in Indian music through that album.

My brothers and I returned the favour by turning dad onto The Pixies "Surfer Rosa" album a few years later (he really got into that one). :)

Although I usually put the iPod on shuffle when I'm driving, this is what I've been listening to this week when I'm not letting random bits decide for me:

Ozzy - Blizzard and Diary. I hadn't listened to this stuff in years. I forgot how amazing Randy's work was. Timeless...if you like that kind of thing.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51MURby2xXL._SL500_AA240_.jpg https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51iwyUTpggL._SL160_.jpg

Bela Fleck - Live at the Quick.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/513AGQCTH6L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Mark Knopfler - Sailing to Philadelphia
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21B10CWT2KL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Knopfler will probably always be one of my favorites, although I don't own much of his stuff. I must obtain more...kind of like guitars and amphs.

Um, you mentioned three of my favorite things in one post. Ray Charles, Ravi Shankar and the Pixies. :D

This morning I am listening to the majority of my Sonic Youth collection on shuffle. Probably will do whole albums again later but for now I don't feel like picking and I pretty much love all of it.

The Pixies will always remind me of my ski bum job after law school but before "real life", where I was the only swing shift prep cook at the Sun Valley Inn with a law degree. We enjoyed having a rude boy existence in the back kitchen, preparing food at warp speed while the Pixies, or Suicidal Tendencies, or RHCP or Jane's Addiction blared on a boom box. I mean, all we wanted was a Pepsi!

I cannot concentrate at work with those songs on now (work is way more mental and way less physical now), and so I am now listening to a pandora station based on Bill Frisell. It is currently playing some sweet Metheny, "Bright Size Life" off of "Midwestern Night's Dream". :AOK: :AOK:

I just have to say that if anyone enjoys mellow, but well played guitar instrumentals while at work, with a variety of great guitar tones by the way, that person should start a Pandora station with Bill Frisell as the seed. It is excellent for office work back ground tunes.

My new (used) car only has an FM/Cassette, so I am stuck listening to the radio. Fortunately we have a station that is commercial free called the Alternation. They have a weak signal (down at 88.9 on the dial) and broadcast out of a high school in Streetsboro Ohio. Fortunately I live close and I work close (inside the red circle on the attached map), so it is an opportunity to hear new national and local artists.

John Zorn's "The Dreamers"
Live Feb 7, 2009

this band doesn't necessarily have an official name per se. they were the band for "the gift" album and for "the dreamers" album so people have taken to calling them the dreamers now. this show from february was the debut of material for their new album which will be released on the 28th (i assure you, you will be seeing it a lot in here in the weeks and months to come). this band is zorn at his most accessible and features some fantastic playing from mr. ribot.

the band is...

marc ribot - guitar
jamie saft - piano/organ/keys
kenny wolleson - vibes
joey baron - drums
trevor dunn - bass
cyro baptista - percussion

Listening to "Sun is Coming," by Matt Wilson (a solo track from the front man of long-defunct Minneapolis band "Trip Shakespeare.") It's got a very cool acoustic guitar riff that I'm digging.

I don't like this one as much as From Mars to Sirius, but I'm hoping it will grow on me after repeated listenings.
