Okay, this is sort of another MJ comment (forgive me), but I did find something of interest over the past couple of days.
I think when it comes to MJ, both he and MTV benefited from each other. MJ was popular before MTV (mostly Jackson 5 fame), but MTV certainly catapulted his solo fame to unprecedented levels of fame never seen before. I doubt Thriller would have reached the sales figures that it continues to see, nor do I think MTV would have been such a sensation without Thriller.
That said, a couple of questions for discussion:
1) What other artist do you think made a contribution to MTV that stood out from the rest?
2) What artist do you think would have never made it without MTV?
3) Like Jackson, what existing artist (prior to MTV) do you think reached new levels of popularity due to the existence of MTV?
My answers:
1) Van Halen
2) Duran Duran
3) Aerosmith (also throw Van Halen in here)
