View Full Version : Rylan wanted 'em unfinished....

...so here they are. It's a ZYS Mark II (on the left) and a Rabid Rodent. He wanted them unpainted, so I brought them to work and buffed them up on a "soft" grinding/polishing wheel we have. Not quite a mirror finish, but not too bad. Hope you like 'em, Rylan!

Those are absolutely sick!!!

Those are pretty badass vood. I'm looking forward to the package arriving. I might mist up a little bit and a single tear will probably escape my right eye.

Well, I better be heading out to buy a new yellow spandex "Stryper" style outfit.

Rylan, please be advised that I have specifically wired these two pedals to stop working when operated by anybody dressed like this:

AAMOF, now I'm kinda glad that you didn't get the ZYS in the usual bright yellow color! ;) :rotflmao:

What about my Paul Stanley get up? Will the pedals work with my disco ball finished guitars?

Maybe. But try to keep your plentiful chest hair out of the pots & switches....

I was thinking I might hafta make some youtube videos playing with them when they arrive. I'll see if I can even make a website to rival Robert's. Maybe something like "www.porpoise-boulevard.com" if it's available.

Of course a Swedish accent will take some time to master....and there's no way I'm gonna run 40 km this week...or even this month...

I would love it if you would update my old review of the Rodent pedal that I did. I would love to hear what you think. (and give your impressions of the ZYS II too of course).

I did one in a thread DVM had started regarding the build, and re-posted it here under the title "DVM's Rabid Rodent BYOC Mouse v.2 Proco Rat Clone review" so it could be found better. Click the link below, then click the link that first appears in the body of the first post to get the content of the review. I am going to see about getting these two threads merged.

Man, you guys are lucky to have basements, I wish my house does.

Does anyone have a tone triad pedal from vood? How is it?

Kite, are you referring to my "Tone Triage" pedal, made from the BYOC Triboost kit? If so, Fretters who own them include Piebaldpython and Tunghaichuan. I didn't build Tung's, just did the finishing on it.

Nelskie, an "original" Fretter (ID # 21) who is unfortunately no longer active here, also bought one and posted detailed comments in THIS THREAD (http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=11172). His had a custom finish on it that he designed and I applied.

So now the review and tech info is all merged here: http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=9271&page=2

My review and impressions start on pages 3 and 4. DVM gives the technical info and some clips before that. Can't wait to hear your impressions and/or further review, and maybe here you rock our world with some clips if you have time. :AOK:

There's something to be said for understatement.

Which is why I painted my BYOC Overdrive 2 black. It started out black with everything labeled in white. I then added stupid drawings until it looked like a school chalkboard.

Some light sanding and a few more coats of black fixed it back up. All black with a few reference dots.
I dub it, The Black Box (thanks to DVM for the name):

I left the bottom unpainted for standard abuse resistance.
I decided there's no need for labels, since it takes only a little playing to remember what each knob and switch does.
It is a stock OD2, which sounds really nice with the P-90's.

That is pretty badass. So far, because I have no finish on mine, I just use dry erase markers on all my pedals to mark where I like them. Although I think you've just given me the idea of using several difference colors and marking several settings by color...

I just played my first gig with my DVM pedals, and they are wicked!! I love how quiet they are compared to my last few dirt pedals....Boss can eat it!

Glad to hear they're working well for you, Rylan! :AOK:

What you mention here shows another advantage of BYOC kits--top quality electronic components. They really do make a difference in keeping pedals quiet. Of course, I'd like to think that high quality workmanship is a factor here, too.

I realize that not everybody is going to want to drop $100+ on a handbuilt effects pedal, but they really do offer a level of quality you're not going to get from the mass-produced stuff....

In my case, good workmanship didn't help when I reversed the AC adapter's positive wire locations! :thwap: Thanks to DVM for getting me on the right track. It has been a few years since I had to assemble anything this complicated.

I agree with how quiet the pedal is. I'm looking forward to my next pedal build!

Umm, actually, that was poor workmanship that didn't help ya there, Tig! :poke: ;)

Seriously, that is THE most common build mistake on the OD2 that we come across over at the BYOC forums, so don't feel bad in the least. AAMOF, when I put together the OD2 build FAQ (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=18593) over there, I specifically mentioned that as a very common error in the first post of the thread....

Just finished the BYOC Mouse 2.0 pedal build. Sounds great so far. I haven't built the full blown DVM Rabid Rodent mod yet, just the Ruetz mode switch, which I really like.

I changed out the knobs and used a bright orange paint. Too bad my silver sharpie lettering is the suxxers.

Thx! I wish I could take a better picture of it.

Building these is kinda' easy for me since I've been doing similar stuff off and on for the last 24 years. These builds can get a little tricky, though, so consider a DVM built one.

My "Thesis 96" pedal (see my sig) is a DVM-built one. If I built one, I'd build something very simple. For now, though, my pedal needs are pretty much met.
