New Guitar Incoming!

I was out and about, running errands today. On our way to look for some new furniture, we stopped to drop of my ASAT Special at the my favorite store. It's getting a fret levelling and will be 110% soon.

I have been lusting over this "Himalayan Blue" G&L SC-2 for a while now (looks exactly like the example on G&L's website):

I can't stop playing it. I like it more than any of the G&Ls or PRSi hanging on the wall...and that's saying something. Really feels like this guitar should be mine. You know what I mean? You play better on it than the other guitars in the store. You can dial it in right away.

Well, I was taking it for a spin...again...and the wife told me I should pull the trigger on it. We debated it for a while (I have 6 electrics and have been relegated to hobbyist for years now), and she shocked the salesguy by pushing me to buy this guitar. What an enabler. Bless her heart!

I put money down so they'd hold it for me, as I couldn't lug it around with me all afternoon. I'll bring it home tomorrow (actually later today as of this writing) and I will have it to play during this week's vacation.

I received a quote for $1300 to have my car fixed to pass the Ohio environmental test. I ended up doing it myself for about $160 and passed the test today. Now if wife was like Hucks, I would be out right now picking out my new ES335.

The SC-2 Reissue is an "updated" version of one of Leo Fender's earlier G&L designs (all of the good body shapes were taken). This "new" version has the controls postioned differently, and not on a curved control plate. It also has the Dual Fulcrum tremolo, which didn't arrive on the scene until after the "original" SC-2s had run their course. I like this tremolo bridge. The art deco bridge plate belies the sheer functionality of it: it sits paralell to the body, can raise or lower the strings/pitch, but will not go anywhere until you grab the bar and make it go somewhere. Tuning stability is excellent for vibrato, but obviously the lack of locking tuners makes divebombing a crapshoot at best.



Like it's ancestor, the 21st century SC-2 has Leo's MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups, with the bridge pickup being wound extra hot. The "regular" MFDs were designed for more output with less hum. My "main" guitar is an ASAT Special with these pickups, and it sounds like a really ticked-off Telecaster. The SC-2 bridge pickup sounds even angrier, and is great for overdriving my amp into Malcolm Young or Townshend Live at Leeds riffing. Adding the OCD pedal with the gain halfway up gets me into early Sabbath territory (Iommi's original SG had P-90s, I believe).

The neck is a 60's "C" carve, with a 12" radius and what look to be medium jumbo frets. The neck is what got me really excited about this guitar: it plays beautifully, and feels like it was carved for my hand. Combined with the tone of this instrument, it didn't take long for me to become obsessed (despite the "unusual" body shape...which has really grown on me). This is "my" guitar. I'm thinking of selling my Hamer to finance another SC-2. I like it that much.



The deal: I went into my local G&L dealer during their "Leo's 100th birthday" sale. All the US made G&Ls were $100 off (the Tributes were marked down by $50). So I asked about the "I come in here all the time and have dropped a lot of money in this store on top of being a cool guy" discount, and the salesguy called the owner. So they knocked it down by another $50 with a deluxe G&L gigbag (these guitars do not come with a hardshell case, nor do they fit in a molded G&L case). I got a generic tweed case for $75. All in all, I feel like they took good care of me at my favorite guitar store.

I know the feeling, since I have the same kind of relationship with my local store, where I bought my custom-ordered ASAT Classic Bluesboy SemiHollow a year ago, for a redciulous 'preferred customer' price, and before that, had started my G&L Jones about 6 years ago with a Tribute ASAT Special, that I traded to get the ASAT Special SH that's now fellow-fretter cb's (that shiner keeps 'stealing') and Comanche that I regret having to part with, but at least it went to another fellow fretter.

I notice you hang now & then at the G&LDP and announced this, and asked about the birdseye maple neck 'issue' there...so, a word of caution on the DF Trem system (awesome trem, loved it on the Comanche)...be careful with the little nylon bushing in the arm socket...critical little part, like the little spring in a Fender trem, only not easy to find or replace if you lose it.

Thanks for the heads up on the bushing. I had a Legacy some years ago, so I am aware of the little bugger.

However: the screw that adjust it is gone! :rotflmao:

My dealer is dropping one in the mail to me.
