View Full Version : So what's your best gear acquisition for 2009?

For me, I would have to say the Rabid Rodent, Zonkin' Yellow Screamer Mk II, the Line 6 M9 and the Mack GEM.

Honourable mention - Dunlop Crybaby - I just haven't had time to use it much, but I love it.

And you?

Probably the Boss ME-50 -- that thing is great, and I use it constantly.

Oh, man--that's tough. Got the Egnater Rebel 20W head, the Carvin California Carved Top CT6M, and the Reverend Jetstream 390 all this year, and I love 'em all to death! And that's not even including the Trinity Amps 18W TMB kit I just took delivery of, but haven't built yet. It's been a "good year for good gear" for the ol' Voodoo Man!! :AOK :happy

Without a doubt, mine would be my Vox Night Train (http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=12417&highlight=Vox+Night+Train). Also loving my BCE Boosta Grande.

Man, I got a LOT of stuff in 2009. Almost all unlooked-for, to use a Tolkeinism.

If I had to choose a single thing it'd probably be the like-new Super Champ XD I picked up for $175 in a pawn, since I've been using that every week for church praise band practices and service performances, and will probably use it for performances with the new side band Cinnamon Hill, assuming things continue to go well with them (only 2 practices so far).

That said, I picked up THREE basses this year, a couple of them for peanuts (Peavey USA Fury I for $125, Epi Thunderbird for $100) and a third for a decent price (Peavey T-40 w/ohsc $275). But since I already had a couple basses, a close second to the SC XD would have to be my li'l $85 Oscar Schmidt acoustic-electric mandolin, which I've begun to play regularly in church, and which maybe got me a gig with this Cinnamon Hill band.

Also rans:12-string Daisy Rock Retro-H (good deal but a niche instrument); Esteban acoustic-electric (hey, just a Benjamin for an a/e guitar).

Without question, my new 1996 Martin, pictured currently in my (former before this day) avatar and in this thread, and now below: http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=13486

I did not buy many things in '09, and sold a few to get this, but it was worth it! :AOK

I really like the rest of my gear too, but it all pre-dates 2009.

Not guitar gear, but I picked up these in an effort to reduce weight for canoeing.
A Therm-a-Rest Trekker chair sleeve that converts your sleeping pad into a chair!
Extremely comfy, and weighs a mere 298 grams (9 oz) Awesome piece of gear :AOK
http://www.actionoutdoors.co.uk/shop/images/therm/litecl.jpg

Also picked up a nifty 2 person tent weighing 2.3 kgs, or just about 5 lbs.
Not what I'd call roomy, but easy to set up and take down, and man is it easy on the back.

As I have been concentrating this year more on making guitars than buying them, this has been a slower than average gear year. Still, I did manage some purchases of which the Vox Tonelab LE and the IK Multimedia Reverb plug-in stand out. Oh and the EZ Drummer drum software is nice too.

Absolutely the Boss RC-2 Loop Station I just got.

As posted in the pedals page, after only one night using it I'm convinced a looper is an essential piece of kit. I posted a short video of one of my quick tests, but search for boss RC-2 on youtube and you'll see some impressive stuff.

I have a tie on two purchases...

First my Danelectro Tuna Melt Tremolo - awesome pedal, great bang for buck.
Also it finally completed my set...

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs208.snc1/7519_292596695423_572465423_8961703_825986_n.jpg

The tremolo is the yellow one in the middle - from right to left I have a tuner, metal distortion pedal, fuzz pedal, tremolo, echo / delay, 7 band eq, dan-oh-wah. can't get enough of Danelectro... have my eye on a Danelectro U2 guitar next...

And that ties with my lovely new Epi Firebird (second only to the mighty Gibson, oh if only I had a couple of grand to spare...). You can monitor it's modification progress here (http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=13555), just started the painting - going well!

For me it is the Marshal JVM 410 H , with an A&B Vintage Marshal Stack.

For 2010 It's gonna be a Shur, or the top of the line Les Paul.

Wow where do I start

a 3 way tie

1A. my MIM 06 BLACK STRAT with direct mounted pups 60th anniversary neck.. that sucker is the heaviest strat ever and tone for days.

1B. my VOX DA20 portable amp battery operated or AC. You can jam anywhere you want and still have a very good sound on hand. Took it on vacation and was able to jam right on the beach in Pismo Beach CA too cool Cool suds, waves and strat priceless.

1C. 1992 Les Paul Classic Plus now that it has been setup cleaned and re-stringed this is one sexy axe and it roars. I have only had it home 2 days but I extremely happy and appreciate how lucky i am to run across this deal.

2A. Line6 FLEXTONE III XL & FBV SHORT BOARD. Lots of power tons of built in affects very versatile amp.

2B. 2008 MIJ PINK PAISLEY STRATOCASTER Very well made my 2nd most played guitar has killer tone if you want that Classic old school Fender sound/tone it has it and then some killer highs. i just wish it had the 9.5 neck rather than the 7.25 neck but it is still a very nice axe its a keeper for sure.

3A. Couch guitar straps & Levy padded leather straps Love them both and recommend both.

That's pretty much everything I bought this year. LOL

I had a lot of aquistions in the early part of 2009, but to say which was my best aquisition I would have to say the two Gold Top LPs. One was a P90 equipped GT by Vintage guitars. Made in China and really resonable. I had to have a Fret job done on it for 100 and for a total of 529 is is a really sweet guitar. The other was my Gibson Classic GT. I brough it from my local dealer and used a Blues Deluxe Rleissue amp, and a Deluxe MIM strat and some cash. I just love this guitar. I thought I had a problem with the finish but I have been told by many LP experts that Iam a lucky bastid for having it checking already.

Mine was the Blackheart head (BH5H) and a Kajun speaker for my AD30VT. I may have purchased the ME-50 in 09, don't recall.

For 2010 - no plans on any purchase unless it is the ES335 if I add a guitar. Could buy pick-ups.

I think I've plateaued in life's possession pursuit - I have nothing I want for Christmas except time to reflect.

I got incredibly lucky - Well .02 I picked up
a '94 PV C30 for the money and probly 2 weeks
later I bounced in a pawn shop and just almost
tripped over the 112 extension cab... Believe it

back flip when I looked down and saw the price
and grabbed it up... '09 was actually a righteous

I couldn't say it any better, og.:agree This particular guitar came into my hands in a set of particularly cosmic circumstances. And because of her, I went ahead and indulged in my ASAT Bluesboy, for a different spin of tonic flavors. But, life happens and I had to make a choice, to let her go. Luckily, for me and for 'Sugar', cb was able to adopt her and give her the home and appreciation she deserves.

...that Tak is going to be a treasure to anyone who is lucky enough to buy her.
I actually had one query on her from a fellow fretter a few days ago, but when I reminded that person of the wider, virtually classical, fingerstyle fretboard, it wasn't in the cards.

Funny thing...I had a shot last weekend at trading the EAC38C straight up for another ASAT, this one a 'straight' ASAT Classic, solid ash in Tobacco Burst, same gun-oil tint maple neck/board, an '07 or '08, near mint....I almost pulled the trigger, rationalizing that the Tak is a boring acoustic dud in this Elecric Ladyland house, and that the ASAT would be more likely to find a buyer here and return me the cash I need. But then, I balked when I realized that not too many folks here would pop $900 or so on a solid ash Tele with Leo Fender's ultimate Tele pickup design in them. I'm looking about trading her for 4 or 5 Ibanez, Squire or Stagg Strat-clones the store has in stock. They might move.

A Rick Turner Model 1 will be arriving on Wednesday or Thurday of next week, along with a Boss RE-20 Space Echo, and three Zoalla cables on or about Wednesday.

Earlier in the year I bout an Epiphone ES-175 that I really like, but nothing can touch the Turner Model 1 that's coming.

That's pretty much used up my gear money for the year...or the next 20.

Toss up between my Gretsch Electromatic 5120 and the brand-spankin' new Hagstrom Ultra Swede. Also picked up a Vox DA5 for a practice amp that I'm really happy with.

Out of all the stuff I've gotten. I think that perhaps, the 3-inch wide soft leather strap that I put on my MK was my best purchase. It is sooo comfortable...I'd like to get one for my other electrics. But they aren't cheap.
