View Full Version : Hagstrom Swede - New Guitar Day!

Robert
January 16th, 2010, 05:13 PM
I bought a new guitar today! Well, I haven't actually payed for it yet... I am testing out over the weekend, but I suspect I won't be able to return the guitar due to its coolness...

It's a guitar I've played at the store for over a year. Can't believe nobody bought it yet. So, I walked in there today, and it just talked to me. It outright said "get me, buddy, we'll be great friends, I promise!" - and who can resist when a guitar talks dirty to you like that? So, the guitar followed me home.

I'll let you guess what it is. It's under $600 CDN.

<edit>
I am adding this video, since the smart minds here on TheFret figured it out pretty quick. ;)

kidsmoke

well, if it was "talking dirty" it must be an electric. Acoustics are the ones you take home to meet Mom, electrics are bad.....

I'm guessin' it has a beautiful pair...of humbuckers, of course.

Robert
January 16th, 2010, 07:02 PM
It's an electric, but not a tele.

Beautiful Pair

A semi hollow? 335? Gonna ride with the king? As in B.B.?

What the heck kind of stop bar is that...I immediately think Gold top Epi because you said below 600 so that rules out a Gibson, but that tailpiece puzzles me... It looks to have a carved top but I can't tell for sure. Who makes a double humbucking under 600...:thwap

MAXIFUNK

OK I'll bite its a Hagstrom swede or gibby gold top

Robert
January 17th, 2010, 12:06 PM
Yeah, it's a Gold Top Swede! What a great guitar. Case with it, uh not sure actually...

The tone filter, uhm, good question. I funkifies the guitar, really. :D All I know is that sounds nasal with the switch down, and up it's more mellow or something.:rockon

The reason I mentioned case, was that their Gig bag is called a "Hag Bag".
The Hagstrom cases look really nice.
It looks like a sweet guitar. I am surprised it goes for under 600 dollars.

It's a killer guitar for any price! The pickups are awesome. I ain't changing, they have a fat big sound to them. I am in awe.

It also has a good tuners and hardware overall - it stays in tune perfectly and no crackling pots, etc. It's the best Les Paul not made by Gibson I have ever played personally. It's not super heavy either, which is a very good thing, for several reasons.

Thumbs UP! Video demo coming soon. :happy

That has a (slight) semi-hollow bodied tone to it, is it cambered? Nice Robert very nice indeed.

No, it's a solid body. Thanks.

I'd say "welcome to the club", but you already had the "Swede" angle covered...

Congrats... sounds killer and looks awesome. What do you think of the "resonator" neck? How does the tone compare to an LP? Sounds delicious in your video... I'll have to swing out your way with my Ultra Swede so you can take 'er for a rip! It'd be cool to hear it in the hands of a master :french

Like the gold-top, very classy. :applause

Robert
January 17th, 2010, 11:00 PM
Thanks! This guitar sounds fabulous I think. Love the pickups. I never had a Gibby LP so I can't say how close it is in sound. I do know this is a classy sounding blues and rock guitar though. I can stupendous clean blues tones on the neck pickups. Brilliant, really!

The resonator fretboard is fast and friendly. :happy

Yeah, come on over, and we'll have a Swede party! Yay!

Thank goodness there's not a Super Norwegian, Select Super Finn, or Ultra Danish guitar, at least as far as I know! :D

I think the reason this guitar never sold is because all the young punks buying guitars these days don't like that gold top color. Old chaps like us, have a more, should we say sophisticated taste, and I do say that gold top color is oh so classy!

Robert I whatched the vid and I was waiting for you to kick in the Marshall.
I think it would really come alive through it. Nothing like the rich creamy tone from a Marshall and a humbucker.

Bloozcat
January 20th, 2010, 01:11 PM
I'm envious Robert! That guitar sounds great!

One of the biggest gear mistakes I ever made was to sell my old Hagstrom Swede. It was a 1974 model made in Sweden that I bought new in '74. It was a black one with an ebony fretboard as they were made then.

I never cared much for the filter switch on mine. I installed a pair of original mid 70's Dimarzio Super Distortion humbuckers in it and wired the neck pickup (which was a Dual Sound) to an "on-on" switch I installed in place of the stock filter switch to use as a coil cut. Man, that combination rocked! Pure 70's rock tone...

I really didn't need to see this video demo. Must...control...GAS...pains...:drool

Robert
January 20th, 2010, 02:23 PM
Thanks guys, the Marshall will come in a later video...

Bloozcat, that was a dumb thing to do... better get a new one. Watch the video again! :D

Congrats, Robert, that looks sweet. I've only had my hands on one of those and it was in another state, but I liked it. Maybe it's a good thing they don't stock them around here.

Thought I should also post my question here as it is really about this guitar mod I heard about. I saw on FB that you swapped pickups in your Swede. So, . . . we need details! :D What did you do and how do you like it?

Robert
July 2nd, 2015, 12:48 PM
I will tell you all about it in a couple of weeks. I'm away right now. The pickups in the guitar are Porter pickups. They sound much smoother and clearer and suit my bluesy style perfectly.
