Does anyone here play World Of Warcraft?
I'm wondering if it has to be played through an internet connection or you can just play it on your PC without having to go on line.

If I understand it right, the whole idea of it is that it's interactive. You create a character and everyone else sees you as your character just as you see them as theirs. People are on it all the time, all over the world, and come and go much as in real life. But, I think that's where the comparison with real life ends.

Isn't this one of the games that has sucked peole in so completely where they don't leave the house, lose their jobs, and sometimes even give up bathing and eating regularly just to stay "in the game" all the time?

Yeah if you get into that, say goodbye to playing guitar... :(

I went to Wiki and found out that you have to be online to play and that it continually costs money to do so. I'll pass.

What other games are good that I can just play on the computer. I'm looking for something for my daughter and myself. We certainly don't want to get as involved as WoW.

I've played games from here with our kid - perhaps your girl is too old for these but have a look http://pbskids.org/games/

Have you thought about ditching the computer and play board games instead? There are so many excellent board games that provide hours upon hours of enjoyment.

The great thing about board games is that there is just a one time fee, you don't need to upgrade your computer, and you can even play outside without the battery dieing. :)

I love "Ticket to Ride" http://www.daysofwonder.com/tickettoride/en/
And Agricola: http://www.zmangames.com/boardgames/agricola.htm
This site has tons of reviews: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/

Cheers!

My daughter (10 years old) loves playing games on her Nintendo Dsi.. Especially Harvest Moon which in fact is popular with her dad as well :what
I think that the Harvest Moons games is available on the Wii as well if you have one of those.

Yup. We do plenty of those too but it helps her concentration more when she sits at the computer and works on something that moves. She has some dyslexia and add. For some reason she fails hard at board games as far as concentration goes but on the computer she'll stick with it.

From the ads I've been seeing on the SciFi channel, it looks like Star Trek is reviving/expanding their interactive game. Several years ago I was on the startrek.com site and there was a forum where they were "recruiting" crews for various Federation battle ships to fight some dreamed up threat to the Federation. Now, it looks like it's entered a new phase with better graphics and more "realism" (or so we're told).

This is another one of those games that consumes you. You choose a character, apply for a position on a particular ship, and become that person as an alter ego. Games like this are as demanding as living a real life (or more so), and for some, these fantasy worlds become more appealing than their real lives.

Hey, who wouldn't want to explore strange new worlds, zap aliens with phasers, and make the universe safe for civilization? Be a geek among geeks, but look like a larger than life hero! :whatever:

Chiming in a little late, but as a former WoW addict I can attest to its HIGHLY addictive nature.

I've been a PC gamer since, well, PC's, but WoW sucks you right in more than anything else I've seen. I'd never sat at my desk from 6am to 3am the next day playing a game until I got WoW. After a couple of years I had to force myself to remove it from my drive so I didn't have any more temptation.

Oh and not only do u have to play on line, you need to pay a monthly subscription fee too.

All that said, it is an awesome game though. It's like everything I used to dream about back in the old pen and paper D&D days, it just sucks soooooo much time.
