The vacuum pens are great, but to really get all the excess solder of of a contact, I find copper de-soldering braid works the best. It leaves the contact tinned as well.

I use these:

http://www.wassco.com/Products/881-Solder-Suck--1-oz__WAS-05-16881.aspx

http://www.wassco.com/Products/881BZ-Anti-Static-Solder-Sucker-1-oz__WAS-05-16882.aspx

Great googly moogly, though. I paid about $8 apiece for them about 6 or 7 years ago. Why are they 3X as much now?

Those solder suckers work great but have one main problem: once the solder is in the bulb, it doesn't come out. Both of mine are nearly full.

I have both the suction pen and the braided wick that C64 and navvid posted.

For a desoldering tool I like this http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/OK-Industries/DP-100/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs8I5ltipPMAL3qGgbCpyqv it works well on a large or small solder joint. Just add some fresh solder for good thermal flow count a few seconds and pull the trigger. Braid is ok and you need it for clean up but you have a greater chance of lifting a trace or pad off the PCB when using
