This is in my home town. I like to tinker, I like to solder.

How hard is it to work on old tube amps.
How likely is it to be fixable? (Quick googling says High voltage power supply is impossible to replace--sounds wrong)
How much would I offer this guy if wanted to try my luck.

This guy paid 350 for one...that worked. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/amp-central-station/30410-ampeg-vt-40-a.html

If I could get it for 50-75 might be worth tinkering with?

If you've never worked on tube amps before, I would give it a pass. Most tube amps have voltages present inside the chassis that can kill you dead, no joke.

Ampegs in particular have very high power supply voltages. Don't mess with this amp unless you really, really know what you're doing.

Depending on what is damaged in the power supply that amp could get to be a real money pit in a hurry.

I've been working on amps and building them for about 15 years now, and Ampeg amps still scare me.
