Well I got the Mission Tweed Deluxe 5E3 kit tonight and man it sure looks good. I got most of the board populated tonight and will continue the work tommorrow. These things are really interesting to build! When I first went through all the parts I was thnking man you served up an adult portion for yourself this time Mark  LOL. Now that Im under way its going real smooth, just have to take it slow and triple check everything you do as there are LOTS of color coded SMALL parts as well as capacitors that must go in the right way. Still many connections to go. I'll be getting some pix up on photobucket for you guys to see how I progress. Now I just need to get her built and hopefully not see any "Blue smoke" and let the Mojo escape! The Tweed cabinet for this is real nice a little smaller than my Blues deluxe, all pine wood, oxblood grill and laquered and even has a nice real leather handle to boot. Should be a nice little tone monster when Im done.:DR

Mark, that sounds so cool, building your own amp. Keep us posted on how it goes. Can't wait to see some pics and hear some clips.
What's up next?
(will we soon be hearing about a Mark-all Plexi?:DR )

I just glanced at the Mission 5E3 Kit Home page & this is what it said

What our customers are saying:
"Just wanted to confirm the kit arrived safely today via FedEx. Can't wait to get started, thanks for your assistance."

What? No testimonials on how easy it was to build or on how *SWEET* it sounded when finished?!? Just....

"...ummm got my kit!"

Maybe you're the first one who actually tried to build the thing!

Good luck!!!

Some folks have a hard time containing their "exhuberence" LOL

Funny little sidenote. Im showing my wife the kit explaining how it works and I take out a tube and tell her now this is where the "Mojo" comes from, and ask her do you remember seeing these when you were a kid. To which she says Oh yea I remember those!....They're "sparkplugs" !!!!

Man how old *is* she?!? They made cars with vacuum tubes back in the day?
Must'a sounded sweet out on the road.

"Put the pedal to the metal & see if we can get some nice carburator breakup!"

Good thing they remembered to put the mojo in the kit! I hate it when they
forget to put the mojo in. A guitar, amp, pedal...with no mojo is a sad, sad thing.

So Mark, is building the amp all about soldering and soldering and soldering...?

Mark

Actually its like a puzzle but you have the key to where thew pieces go. First get the components populated on the board with all the leads then check, check and check again! Then solder, solder....my trusty iron is still cold. Probably ready for solder later today. I

"Estimated Time of Amphage"?

Probably by next weekend, Ill be working on it today as well and mow da lawn but tommorrow Im goin with the wife taking out the Jetski. So that just leaves me after work this week. Im taking it slow and meticulous, haste make sparks and that aint good. Heres a similiar layout from Weber if you havent seen it yet
https://taweber.powweb.com/store/5e3_layout.jpg

as you can see there are lots of opportunities to screw up LOL. Gots to keep that Mojo in thar.

Mark that is simply awesome. I share your enthusiasm and excitement over your project. Reading your first description of the kit with the oxblood grill and lacquered tweed and pine cab sent chills down my spine man! I can't wait to see what you've accomplished and yeah post some pics as soon as you can. I hope you've also taken some as you went along? Keep us at the edge of our seat and keep the reports coming!

Is that a 2 input/channel amp?

Also, what planets do you contact with that computer? Is that a V8 with a Hemi in that thing? I've never seen such a tricked out computer. Wow!

Mark
September 23rd, 2006, 09:56 PM
The 5E3 has 4 inputs on 2 channels bright and normal a vol for each channel one tone for both. The sweet thing is the vol for the channel your NOT using alters the tone of the one that is in use, get some sweet tones that way. The 57 Tweed RI by Fender has similiar traits which I like. What drew me to this model is its only 15-18 watts which is all I need and if I put 6K6 tubes in it that will put me at around 7-8 watts for home jamming but with the nice tones and early breakup these are known for. After a few years on the road and being 51 now I wanna save whats left of my hearing, too close to too many 100watt Marshall stacks for too long has that effect.

Thats the computer I built earlier this year its a AMD 4800 dual core on a DFI Lanparty motherboard with an ATI X1900XTX 512 meg video card, 2 gigs of OCZ PC-4000 gold XTC memory and both Video card and Processor are water cooled. Im using an EMU 1820m sound card for audio. It has its own radiator and reservoir for the water and its real quiet. I do some gaming and I used to race a NASCAR simulation in on line races, I also enjoy flight sims and all that stuff requires horsepower. Plus Ive done my share of overclocking, its one fast pooter!...it aint no Dell for sure. Oh and as far as contacting planets...I reach out to which ever ones I want to LMAO:eek:

Damn! That's one beautiful sight there, Will. Looks like you have yourself the "Tweed Motherlode" (I'm still looking for the end of the rainbow in the photo). Is it confusing sometimes trying to pick out which amp you're going to play? Naturally, I'm assuming anyone with a contingent of vintage boxes like that plays the ever-lovin' you-know-what out of them. Please say you do . . . .

Thanks pals,
I have a 5E3 stack on the left, it's a 1956 4 holer and the cab under it is the extension cab w/no fender logo. That amp has a P12Q in each cab and amp.

The Bassmans are all 5F6-A 1957, two 1959 and one 1960.

These are the amps I don't play very much, I will show some pics of other amps. Here is a mix of silverface and blackface amps. all these amps have the original tubes in them.

Oh man . . . I'm starting to get *dizzy* seeing all of the luscious Fender tone stacked up on those shelves. What year is your Silverface Super Reverb? I just picked myself up a '68 model, and absolutely love it!

Since it looks like you're way into the vintage thing, you might want to check out the "Vintage & Re-issue Gear" section of our forum - here:

http://www.thefret.net/forumdisplay.php?f=39

It's a newer section of the forum, so we don't have a lot of stuff on it quite yet. Judging by your fantastic collection of Fender amps, my guess is that you'll have a lot to add!

Also - don't forget to post an introduction under the "Fret Players" section. Welcome aboard! :)

Boy am I depressed! I thought I was doing well with the 25 year collection of match books from all my travels. I am particularly fond of the one from a famous Texas House of ….. No I did not visit the establishment.

That is one absolute unbelievable collection of amps. I agree with Nelskie … how do you pick out which one to play? You definitely have a gold mine there. I sure hope you have bars installed on all your windows.

Thanks for the props,

I have another rare jem, it's the Fender Tremolux 18 watter. This one is packin the EL84 tubes, they made less than 100 of these with the EL84. It's so rare they did not even print the tube charts for this model. they typed them on a typewriter and then they mimeograph copied them with that blue ink.

It has a GZ34, two EL84 and two 7025, one 12AT7 and one 12AX7 in the preamp. Has a single 12" Jensen P12N blue bell speaker and a custom made baffle made out of wood that has a space, to act like a tone ring. I have a Brownie reverb Unit I use with this amp and it sounds like the Marshall 18 watter when I use the Celestion G12/30 speaker. I have two Marshall 18 watt amps, one old original and one I built myself. But this Tremolux has the yellow astrons in it like the old tweed amps and sounds killer.

I have more amps to share if you would like to see the pics.

I am making a photobucket acct now so I can post a lot of pics.

IM going to play guitar now so I will not be around.

Holy mother of Macaroni! That is just sick! You have too many amps, you need to free yourself from some and drop them off at my house...haha!

If we like to see more pics? Well, I bet I am speaking for all of us when I say, YES I ABSOLUTElY THINK SO!

Man, I can't get over what I'm seeing... you should charge people like us an entry fee to come and look at them and maybe play a couple... you'd be filthy rich in no time!

That Tremolux, wow what a gem! Make sure you have enough insurance on your house!

What Nelskie said - post an intro in the Fret players forum if you can.

Welcome, you'll be the cause for a lot of drool on the Fret members' computer keyboards!

Thanks for the props everyone.
I played tonight and had a great time.

it took many years to find the right gear.

Im just learning how to navigate through this website software system.
It will take me a while to learn everything.

In my black & silverface amps photo, the bottom left is a 1964 Deluxe Reverb and it is the early one that has no numbers 1 & 2 above the inputs. It is just blank there. Both the Vibrolux Reverb and the Princeton Reverb have the Jensen C10NS speakers. the top left is a 1967 Silverface Vibro Champ and the right top is a 1968 Bronco Amp and I have the matching red Bronco Guitar with that one. the Super Reverb is a 1967 blackline with the Telefunken GZ34 and the telefunken preamp w/RCA 7025s and the small bottle 6L6GC. And it has the CTS ALNiCo speakers, what a killer sounding amp. The transitional Princeton is a sweet sounding beuty with the CTS square ceramic magnet speaker. Very sweet tone. I recapped the Princeton reverb including a new can cap and I recapped the Super Reverb. All the rest are stock. These are not the amps I play, I have another room for the players.

I will show you my 18 watt Marshalls tomorrow.

best will

Thanks for the note,

Here is a pic of my daily player, a 1960 Deluxe with a Celestion G12 blue.

I installed all new sprague atom caps under the original brown paper astron cap covers. So the amp still looks original under the hood, but it has all new caps.

The amp has much more power and is safe from blowing trannys now with the new caps.

Will - You may want to direct future postings of your collection to the Vintage & Re-issue thread - here:

http://www.thefret.net/forumdisplay.php?f=39

We want to stay on-topic here w/ Mark's recent and most impressive amp build. Posting information under the designated areas of the forum will also allow members and visitors to direct themselves easily to content they are interested in.

If you need help navigating the forum, or have questions regarding posting, you can contact one of the administrators, or hit the FAQ on page menu. Mainly, I want to be sure that other vintage gear hounds can enjoy the photos and information you share about your collection. The Vintage & Re-issue section of the forum will be the first place they look. :)

Otherwise we're gonna have to call the Amp cops on you for amplifier abuse.

You can watch it on Amplifier Planet (a cable station in the US for you non-Americans).
