So how much damage am I causing my new-to-me amph? The fellow I bought the amph from has been using the volume box from day one.

From what I understand, "power attenuators" go between the OT and the speaker, but this one runs through the effects loop.

Thoughts, comments?

Basically, that product is a potentiometer in a box. What it does is act as a pre-phase inverter master volume. The FX loop is basically a break between the preamp and phase inverter in the amp. The device when put in the FX loop acts a a variable resistor and dumps more and more signal to ground as you turn it up. It won't hurt anything to use this with your amp.

It's not really an attenuator because it does not throttle back output from the power tubes.

When you say this does not throttle back output from the power tubes...does that mean it is less likely to color the tone too? Sounds like to me that if you are pushing the tubes well past break up and are using this device....the breakup should still be there even at bedroom volumes. Is this correct in logic?

Kazz.. that's correct.

I've got everything on the amph at 8, and it sounds exactly the same running through the volume box as not... just a LOT quieter. :-)
