Been looking at articles and forums about decent mic pres. Man, this stuff is deep, and can quickly get expensive. I got tired of looking so hard so I broke down and bought this pre online today. It's supposed to be very good.

Mic pre-amps, like desk eq, are very subjective. It's best to shop with your ears.

I'm still pretty much a novice with home recording. I used an M-Audio Firewire Solo for 2 years. A few weeks ago I purchased a Presonus Firestudio Project. I wanted to be able to make a decent recording of a trio I am playing with. We play in my basement, it sounds ok in the room, but I have done nothing to make the space better suited for recording. The Presonus allows for 8 mics. The Firewire Solo only had one XLR and one 1/4" input, so recording multiple instruments to their own track wasn't possible.
Beside the advantage of having more inputs the pre amp in the Presonus sounds noticeably better.

If this is the unit you're getting Robert, depending on what you will be using it for, you may end up feeling a bit of the frustration I felt in terms of the limited number of inputs. I was puzzled looking at the outputs on it also~ one 1/4" and one XLR

That unit has received great reviews, even from the pro's. Supposed to be based on a Neve design.

Yeah I bought based on the reviews. I'm only using it on one instrument at a time, probably just guitar.
