Today we are starting with the root patterns from the CAGED system. I need to get all of the content from my old site to the new one and I figured that moving a lesson a day would give folks a chance to catch up on the older stuff

http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/content.php?125-CAGED-System-Primer-An-introduction-to-Fretboard-Theory

They are also being posted on the front page as articles and any discussion or comments gets dumped into the "lessons" forum as a new thread....

Have fun!

Mark,

If we are following along, CAGED is the first lesson to start with?

You got it!

I'm trying to put these up in the most logical order, and not the order I originally did them :o

last one for this week: 3 note Major Scales: http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/content.php?128-3-Note-per-String-Major-Scales

I might add in the Major Scale drill lesson tomorrow...we'll see how busy I get.....

It's Minor Scale Monday!

http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/content.php?132-Minor-Scale-Lesson-1

This week we have Minor scales and then Relative Major and Minor scale relationships.

If I have the time I'm going to try and get a new lesson or two out about deriving your Pentatonic scales from their major and minor diatonic parents (the scales we've been working on this week and last). If not then next week might be all new lessons since I have some stuff I want to add into the "lesson plan" at this stage that I didn't do the first time around....

Thanks Mark for the chord progression stuff. I can always benefit from re-visiting the basics like this. Eventually, when I remember to apply what I know, my construction of solos will benefit, and maybe even someday I will start writing.

I'm glad you dig it!

Alot of being able to apply the stuff is to use the scales and concepts in musical settings as you learn them...make a point of only soloing with the scale on an Aebersold backing track or something of that nature...

Here's todays updates:

This lesson starts my series on Pentatonic scales...I should have a couple of new lessons this week to tie a few things together: http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/content.php?160-Minor-Pentatonic-Scale-Phrasing-Lesson-1

I'm also starting to blog on my experiences on learning how to do my own guitar setups, mods and repairs...something I've been afraid to tackle on my own for the last 25 years of playing guitar:http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/list.php?category/50-Guitar-Setup/Repair/Modding/1

Interesting concept with the question/response lesson. I never really thought of it in this way, although on some songs, I do find myself using bends at the ends of phrases to emulate a sort of despair "why me, why me?" sort of thing.

Good job.

I like the Floyd series a lot. It's a good primer for people who aren't used to these things. I ended up getting a little Floyd Rose trem stop (http://www.axcessories.com/proddetail.asp?prod=AXfrstp) for string changes. My Floyd is recessed so I can't jam anything behind it as Mark's tutorial shows. It was only $10 and it makes string swapping much easier.

I just got a floyd-equipped guitar last year for the first time in 20 years. I'm just getting the courage up to do a setup on it maybe this week :p

The Floyd tutorials are actually written by a couple of other guys on the forum...

Thanks so much, Mark! I'm self-taught (although I knew theory from accordion lessons, which put me way ahead of the game), starting in 1963. Man, I hope relative newcomers to guitar playing realize what a treasure-trove you're giving them here! I had to pick this stuff up from other guitarists, trial-and-error and just winging it over the years in various bands. You deserve one of these: :master
