I stumbled upon a CD in Starbucks of all places.

I dropped into the place because I was "on the road" for the day, and HAD to find a public restroom. I stopped at the register and saw a VERY colorful album cover...not the standard brown and olive green so prevalent in such places...

Now I've seen both Ry and The chieftains previously, and my girlfriend is Mexican, and the school I hangout at in Chicago strongly promotes traditional latin music, so I get exposed to a lot of stuff. I grabbed the disc, flipped it over and saw the names Lila Downs, Los Folkloristas.etc etc. That was enough.

Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains wanted to tell the story of a band of Irish American immigrant soldiers that crossed over to side with the Mexicans during the Mexican American War. They met an unpleasant end, but this is a story I knew nothing about. Cool history.

If you're open to Chieftains traditional Irish music, and Mexican folk music, this is a very cool hybrid of the two, and different from anything I've heard lately.

Very cool.
