Of Microphones, Conductors and Improvisation....

I just started reading a library book, The Art and Times of the Guitar, and caught this note on this recent historical progression of music that I find worthwhile sharing:

*Microphone and amplification technologies appear -- no need for 15+ violins to "fill" the concert hall anymore.

*Fewer musicians -- no need for conductor (ah!)

*No conductor -- improvisation is possible!

An interesting take on the evolution of modern music. How about an alternative?

Rock/jazz/folk etc. musicians are mostly unschooled (in the high art sense)

They often play stuff they haven't been made to learn note for note.

Improvisation happens (to fill in the gaps).

Causality can be a slippery bugger sometimes :)
