Hi folks,

yesterday we bought the Zoom H2 field recorder. This little machine is supposed to make live recordings of bands, or recording interviews etc.

We had no expectation at all when we unpacked this little "egg". It's not heavier than an orange and as small as a package of cigarettes.

Here are some live clips of my band that we recorded yesterday. We were pretty loud. I think the qualitly is pretty okay for such a cheap and tiny device. Let me know what you think. By the way our bass player could turn up the amph a little bit more next time and I could reduce the highs a little bit on my JTM. Played all the stuff with my lively Gibson Les Paul Gold Top.

Sounds good Jimi, I was wondering what kind of job those Zoom units did, now I know.

Listened to them all. That little unit does a surprisingly nice job. The playing was really nice too :)

Nice. No compression pumping yet the signal is not overloaded or distorted. All frequencies seem to be present too.

We were really positively surprised. Please take into consideration that it was the first use without having studied the manual. I think it is still possible to optimize the quality, but the results are so far at elast something that one can present to someone, they are hearable.

That sounds amazing, especially right out of the box. Good tunes, too.

My wife has one that she let me try out:D . It gives amazing results up close to an acoustic guitar, voice or amp. I'll bet you can get an even bigger cleaner sound once you've played around with it a bit.

Thank you for all you input and positive feedback.

Yesterday, we have tried to get an even more direct signal by placing the unit right in the eye of the tornado, which we had not done before.

The recording was made with the low cut, 120 degrees rear recording, unit about 3 foot away from the drum set, in the middle between the bass and guitar amp. We are not even using the built in limiter or compressor.

I think the quality even improved.

Great, Jimi! I just wrote up an article on my blog about digital handheld recorders (http://www.dolphinstreet.com/blog/handheld-digital-recorders.php). My buddy is getting one now for capturing his live performances in Europe.

They are surprisingly capable, these things. There are several brands that all make great units.

Thank you Robert :-)

It's true what you write in your article. You can not go wrong with buying such a unit. The market offers suitable solutions for every scenario. Also the Tascam recorders are great, but the price quality relation of the Zoom is unbeatable. Please bear in mind that I post MP3s here, but we record in Wav. format with the Zoom H2, which is still even better quality. When we listen to the Waves directly after recording (we use our PA for that) we are always blown away.
You can definitely raise the fun and motivation with those field recorders.

Good info thanks Robert!

Sweet recording Jimi!! This really helps.

Would you guys find a built in speaker to be something to consider on one of these recorders? I see some have one and some don't.

Thank you.
