I have a Blackheart BH112 1x12 cab with a 75 watt Eminence speaker for my Blackheart Handsome Devil 15/7 watt tube head.

I want to replace it with American voiced speaker but does it have to be 75 watts?

Will 30 watts do?

30 watts would be fine and it would probably be more efficient and sound better than the 70

That's exactly what I was thinking. Thanks. :dude

Any suggestions for American voiced 12" 30 watts or so? :help

by the way, I'll be using the Kustom Defender 5H 5 watt head if I ever get the damn thing.

30 to 50 watts would sound best. I'd look into Eminence for the best bang per buck. I like the Legend (http://eminence.com/guitar_speaker_detail.asp?model=LEGENDGB128&speaker_size=12&SUB_CAT_ID=4) or Cannabis Rex (http://eminence.com/guitar_speaker_detail.asp?model=CANNABISREX&speaker_size=12&SUB_CAT_ID=4) for American voiced, Red Fang (http://eminence.com/guitar_speaker_detail.asp?model=REDFANG&speaker_size=12&SUB_CAT_ID=4) for Brit.
They have some good sound clips for each.

I have some Red Fangs for sale. They are awesome speakers, although pricey~
Absolutely like new condition, almost no play time. I grabbed 3 8 ohm and 1 16 ohm when I had a chance but I have almost no amps with 12"s any more.

Maybe look at the Jensen MODs?

Yes and no. 30 watts will be fine. The general rule of thumb I use is to double the speaker's power rating for a given amp's power output. The HD puts out 15, but that's probably clean with minimal harmonic distortion. Cranked up all the way with about 10-15% THD, it probably puts out closer to 20-25 watts.

The efficiency of a speaker is not related to how much power it can handle. For example, one very efficient speakers is the EVM 12L. It can handle 300W continuously, I believe. It is rated at 100db/watt/meter, meaning if one Watt of power is put into the speaker, it will put out 100db when measured 1 meter away from the cone. The Celestion speaker that Kiteman asked about is rated at 95db/watt/meter, less efficient and lower power handling at 50W.

As for lower wattage speakers sounding better than higher wattage ones, it really depends on what you're going for. Lower wattage speakers will distort easier than higher wattage ones. If you're looking for cone/speaker distortion, this is the way to go. Personally, I happen to like the speaker to stay clean. I use 70W rated speakers with my 5W amps. It's all a matter of taste.

Anything 25 Watts or higher and you'll be fine.

I'm having second thoughts about the speakers but I think I'll get a Kustom cab for the Defender 5H instead. The cab is 30 watts.

I think the Kustom amp damaged the speaker in the BH cab (see thread, "I've ordered this amp") and I'm going to replace it with the Eminence Legend 1258 75 watt speaker.

Thoughts on this speaker?
