Dennis Hopper, the high-flying Hollywood wild man whose memorable and erratic career included an early turn in "Rebel Without a Cause," an improbable smash with "Easy Rider" and a classic character role in "Blue Velvet," has died. He was 74.

Hopper died Saturday at his Venice home, surrounded by family and friends, family friend Alex Hitz said. Hopper's manager announced in October 2009 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Nothing short of a miracle that Hopper lived to be 74. Most people wouldn't have guessed that it would be cancer that would bring him down. The death of Gary Coleman is far more surprising. I didn't realize that he was two days older than I. He was the only one of the Diff'rent Strokes cast who had his head even remotely on straight after the show was over.

I also enjoyed him in Pulp Fiction. I liked that he was around. RIP.

I think you may have him confused with someone else on this one. I'm pretty sure he was not in Pulp Fiction.

Yeah, you are right. I was thinking of Harvey Keitel. But I liked him anyway. Hoosiers was one role I liked his work in. Very human portrayal.

I had a feeling you were thinking of the Winston Wolf character.

And I agree, Hopper was fantastic in Hoosiers. I actually found his character more compelling than Hackman's (though Hackman too gave a great performance.)

I liked Dennis Hopper's voice, particularly in unexpected applications like this:

Not exactly... Peter Steele of Type O Negative started the trend. RIP Peter, Ronnie, Paul from the Metal world.
