It's not a guitar, and it's not a pedal, and it's not an amp. Can you guess? It's actually 2 things that work together. I've been wanting this for a long time... and I finally scored on eBay! :dance

It's guitar related, Steve.

Sorry, I watched "Without Limits" about Steve Prefontaine again tonight. And surely two running shoes work together.

Hmm. A nice new mic and stand?

I'm going to go with either pickups or some studio gear (speakers, mics, etc.).

Fretters!! I'm disappointed in your lack of resourcefulness. :nono:

Why guess, when you can do research (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290454657272)??

Hmm. So how'd you find that? I tried an advanced search using the info in this post, but couldn't get anything conclusive.

Advanced search, by bidder (guessed he used "rotren", same as his YouTube ID), completed listings, top bidder. Bingo.

I thought about eBay, but without knowing Robert's user name, there wasn't much to search on.

Aha. I was considering using rotren too, but didn't realize there was a way to search by bidder. Even took me a second just now to see that option over on the left.

Nice work, DVM. Thanks for the tip -- that sort of thing will be useful in the future.

So now for the real question: how do these things work? I've seen some guitars in the past that you can hook up to a synth (e.g. Godin LGXT). This thing says it can be used with a synthesizer. How does the whole thing work/look?

Ahh, DVM saves the day as usual... for you!

Well, I am new to this stuff too, but the way I am going to use it is by installing a GK-3 divided pickup (http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=651) and then plug into the GI-20. From there, I can control synthesizers and notation software. I just found a new GK-3 on Kijiji to a good price, only a 30 minute drive from here.

My main goal with this is to be able to write down notation fast(er) for my lessons. Ideally, I could play a bunch of licks and chords, and the software writes it down for me. I suspect it won't be exactly that easy though (I will likely need to go in and clean up notes here and there), but still better than the mouse-entering I'm doing now. Takes forever.

The other use I see is for making really good backing tracks, with organ, piano, and other synth sounds.

It might be possible I use this for gigs too, but I don't think that is likely to happen soon. Too much hassle and I'm not in a band where it would work.

I have always been curious about one of those. I can only imagine it will open up new worlds. Make us some clips when it arrives
On a side note, the severity of your G.A.S. is reaching epidemic proportions !:dude

I know, the GAS problem has been serious for a while!
Hopefully, this new toy will settle this down a bit.

Otherwise!

That should be a fun item for you. They do have a lengthy learning curve to figure out all they can do. I had one of the earlier Roland synths and it was somewhat over my head. I'm sure you'll be able to get to what you are most interested in...in your spare time. (that's the time when you have nothing else that needs to be done ;) ) BTW - that looks like a good price.
