I think Robert Cray rules when it comes to singing the blues. Just got that Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD and I haven't stopped playing it. And I don't care what people think...I say John Mayer is one talented individual...even though he looks funny doing it.
ps- Did I mention Buddy Guy as being in my list? Oh and Robert Renman? :)

Johnny Winter!!?? Now there's a dude with some chops! If you haven't heard, or don't have it in your collection, "Second Winter" is an album I would highly recommend. Johnny's little bro' Edgar plays on it, too.
Wow. People listening to Johnny Winter down in Brazil. That's awesome. :)

Second Winter was the first Johnny album I bought :)
Man, you would be surprised...many people here love the Blues, and Johnny is surely the favorite of many of them.
I bought his Pieces & Bits DVD last month, have you seen it? The setlist is great (though a bit short) and the image quality kinda sucks... but Johnny's trio really make it a worth buy...

Iago - No, I have not seen the "Bits & Pieces", but thanks a lot for the tip. I'll definitely check it out.
As for people down in Brazil liking the blues, it's a bit hard for me to imagine. Perhaps its because of that stereotypical picture I have in my mind of crowds of people dancing in the streets to cantina or lambada music (which I'm assuming happens at various points during the year). At any rate, people are passionate about blues music just about everywhere in this great big world, and that's the line of thinking one should really have.
Now on that angle of beautiful Brazilian women AND great blues music - - well, it just sends my mind racing a hundred miles an hour. I think I'll hit Travelocity, and see what a plane ticket down there costs . . . ! :D

Oh, Lambada was big around 1989 when I was 6 years old hahahaha...:p

Hey are you folks crazy?
Where's David Gilmour on your lists?
His soli are one of the best peaces of guitar music...mot only "I can play more notes in one bar" but often little songs in a song...
Hey and Johnny Winter... cool but I saw him a fews years ago when i did a job in the backstage area, and he looks (and is) very ill. He stands nearly absolute not moving on the stage, but his fingers are still very good.

tone2thebone,
I see you too are a Nuno disciple! Nice!
Nuno has been as big of an influence on guitar to me as Jimi has. Nuno autographed my American Deluxe for me last Halloween at a Population 1 gig. Very nice guy... and he can play piano, drums, and a bunch of other instruments.
If you can get a copy of the DVD "Guitar Wars", grab a copy. It's got Nuno, John Paul Jones, Paul Gilbert, and a host of others jamming together. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. (It's a Japan-only release) :(

Hey Tremelo -
I think it'd be a great idea for you to write a brief review, or maybe add some addt'l info about that "Guitar Wars" CD to the *new* "Have You Heard" section of the forum. I'd bet there'd be a bunch of people (including myself) who'd be interested in hearing more about it. ;)

I suppose I could do that. If people would really be interested in a copy, perhaps Santa could either create a .torrent of it or mail you a copy if you send me a private message. :) The thing cost me a fortune but was well worth it!

Hey Tremoloman,
I dig Nuno's style. I like the funky tight riffs he's famous for. Just a funky sound and style that I love. Attitude in his playing too. The rhythm licks he does on songs like "He man woman hater" just kill! His sound reminds me of my sound. :)
I remember watching the DVD "Highlander III: The Final Dimension" one time...I'm the type that takes the time to read the credits at the end of every movie I watch...and the song "God took a picture of me" starts playing and I stand up and go "HEY THAT'S NUNO BETTENCOURT"!!! I recognized his playing immediately! I hadn't heard that song before until that moment.
He seems like a pretty cool dude. I've read many of his interviews and thats the impression I get from him. He rips on the piano! (the intro to "Decadence Dance" off Pornograffiti and the New York style of "When I first kissed you")
I just looked at the links you posted. I've been getting a lot of music DVDs lately since I now have a killer large screen tv and digital surround system set up at home. I watch concerts all the time now! I'll order me a copy of this. Thank you for the tip!

I have Nuno's "Schizophonic" CD, and it's a very interesting listen (he's almost a dead-ringer for Marilyn Monroe, too - *see CD cover*) Nuno is "Vai-like" in a some of the aspects of his playing, but as you'd mentioned, seems to have a penchant for the funkier guitar hooks, which is what I really dig about his playing. One of my fave jams of his is from a song called "There Is No God", off of Extreme's "Waiting For The Punchline" CD. Some very cool-sounding, heavy guitar on that CD, too. The dude can definintely "bring it" on the six-string.
I was always puzzled by the fact that Nuno didn't hook up with another band, or form his own band following Extreme's dis-banding (maybe he did, and I just don't know about it.) What's your take on that? Jake E. Lee seems to have followed that same course a few years earlier when he was with Badlands (the band called it quits in '95 following vocalist Ray Gillen's death), and he's now just getting back into the swing of recording again. IMHO, there's way too much guitar talent there not to be active in the studio. I mean, look at Vai & Satriani - they're touring w/ G3 or as solo acts, and release a killer new guitar albums / DVDs every year or so.
Anyways, this is starting to seem like a thread that should gravitate over to the "Have You Heard" section of the forum . . . ? Your thoughts? :D

I have lots of favorite guitarists, but Eric Clapton is the guitarist that I've always liked the most. When the Fresh Cream album first came out, it pretty much cemented my fascination.

ECFAN - So tell us, what did you find fascinating about "Fresh Cream"? The guitar tone? The songs? The lyrics? The arrangements? Also remember that that Cream wasn't "just" Eric Clapton. Jack Bruce (vocals, bass) and Ginger Baker (drums) were two very fine musicians, and a large part of the reason Clapton was able to explore guitar the avenues that he did in that band context. And, why the Cream "sound" literally exploded on the scene when it first came out way back in 1966.

Jimi Hendrix would be my favourite guitarist. Secondly would be SRV, but after that I don't think I could really decide. I really like some of the solos Brian May did in Queen songs, but the live performances I've heard of him are really awful. I also like Eric Clapton; I prefer his performances as an older man as opposed to the cream stuff.

Ok. I am just starting out playing, and so am just going to list a bunch of folks I like listening to right now, without focusing too much on technique.
In addition to:
Jimi
SRV
Albert King
David Gilmour . . . who have been discussed,
I also really like the following:
Neil Young (acoustic - Old man, You and Me, tons of others)
Neil Young with Crazy horse sound.
the Edge, earlier stuff, through Joshua Tree, then All you can't leave behind forward
Tom Wisniewski from MxPx
Bonnie Raitt put on a really great live performance here in SV recently, it was a great Strat show, lots of slide.
Lyle Lovett does some interesting picking stuff.
For Bass guitar - Mike Dirnt
There are lots of others of course. Just a few on my mind/playlist lately
