A few minutes ago I was using my gmail account to relate the results of a hot water test to my wife. We have a spare bathroom that is far from the hot water tank and I commented that we should consider a booster unit.

I pressed "Send" and bam.. there is an ad for A GE booster system..!!

It would appear that the mail is being scanned as it is typed, as I had my text open for a few minutes gathering my thoughts...
The parsing of keywords is quite good too! It would be fun to trick it with dummy words like "blood stains", "alibi" and the like!

No, that was no a pop-up, but the "traditional" text ad within the gmail page, usually a single line in blue type suggesting sites to visit.

And I was using Opera!
(latest Opera version does not play well with gmail, you gotta' play with Security Settings, arrgh!)

Adblock does block out regular ol' banner ads, not just pop-ups. In fact, I think Firefox blocks pop-ups by itself, without the use of an add-on.

I have an add-on at home that not only blocks out the webmail sidebar ad, but will keep the window expanded 100% of the time.

AdBlock stops the text ads too. Like Eric says, Firefox will kill popups all by itself. I have things set up so that FF allows popup windows for when you want them but AdBlock kills the ones that are actually ads.Best of both worlds :)
