Sweet, watching Robert Randolph made me want a pedal steel. Untill I saw him explain everything that goes on with one. So Im leaning towards a resonator now.

Mine is a lap steel.....no pedals. Electric lap steel can really be awesome given the right open tuning. Resos are cool and if you want an acoustic sound, they are the way to go. I have a round-neck reso. If you want electric, then a lap steel is the way to go.

Dang, pie :thwap That is one positively knee-buckling lap...:thumbsup You've gotta be getting heavy into it...What made you decide to go for an 8-string?

I've had a hard enuff time trying to get decent at controlling 6, shuttling between my pawn shop prize 50's Fender lap and Johnson squareneck reso ('Dobro'), both Dobro-G-tuned, and my recently acquired Peavey Powerslide in D.

Meanwhile, for those interested in seeing what a lap or dobro can do in the hands of a maestro, here's a 6 minute clip I stumbled on of Jerry Douglas demonstrating a Cole Clark 'VioLap' lap steel that's more like an electric Weissenborn..

I know....I'm not playing fair. lol

Anyway.........originally the JYD was going to be a six-string in C6 tuning, a tuning that lends itself to great melody playing. But, I read up/conversed with fellow steelers and I went for 8 strings in a modified C6. The middle six-strings will be classic C6 (C-E-G-A-C-E), the highest string will be D (yes, lower than the second string) and eventually I'll tune the lowest string from A to Bb, so that I'll have a dom 7th chords across strings 5-6-7-8.

Oh yeah, I like Dobro G too.....along with Low G tuning...on this little butt-kicker:

22.25" scale...made from heavy tubular aluminum by Chris Fouke....with a PAF 'bucker and a coil split switch. A decidedly "different" sound.
