I found a pretty interesting guitar player from the early 1970s named Ollie Halsall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ollie_Halsall). He was doing Holdsworth type legato as early as 1970. He's a very good guitarist. I'm surprised to not have heard of him until now.

He is known for being in The Ruttles, Tempest and Patto. Pretty interesting solo starting at 2:25.

Ollie was one of those 'greatest guitarists you've never heard' and has remained so long after his passing. You didn't mention the years he spent with Kevin Ayers which presented some of his best work http://www.olliehalsall.co.uk/ayers.htm hit the video in the link and see Andy Summers trade lix with Ollie.
And for those who don't know Kevin... start with Dr. Dream, it's his most rad/heavy (not all that heavy), but his voice and mellow quirkiness are his forte. An original Soft Machine member, toured a bit with Jimi in '68.

I just discoverd him myself so I really don't know a lot of his history. I'll definitely check out some Kevin Ayers. Ollie is a fantastic player. I gotta have more. :dude

Wow! I totally enjoy this music. The solo is awesome. I would have never thought that guitarists played that way back in 1970. Tremendously accurate technique, plus a very unique touch. Gotta check out more if this band and of course of Ollie.

Thanks for posting Spud.
