Hello,
I just bought a 55 Gibson es-295 and i am surprised how good it sounds.Has two p-90's . The pickguard was signed by Scotty Moore. I don't know what to do about the finish though. It has all gone and left me with a bare guitar.I don't know if i should leave as is or have it refinished.Any suggestions?
Thanks,David

An honest to God '55? Leave it alone, and don't do a refin. Call George Gruhn at Gruhn's Guitars and have it appraised. It may cost a few bucks, but it'll be worth it.

And please, play it!

Welcome to the Fret. If you have a chance, cruise on by "The Fret Players" section and introduce yourself, for a proper welcome.

And don't forget to post pics of that guitar!

Thanks,i wanted to ask around and i wasn't going to refin until i knew.I know they had an issue with the finish peeling because of the paint used on the gold tops..I think it looks great like it is anyway. I paid a good amount for this one. I also liked the fact Scotty Moore had signed the pickguard. Until i figure how to post pics here,i am going to put the link to my photo bucket .I have posted pics of the es-295 and some other guitars i have there.
Thanks,David

Wow, you have a Push Tone LP. I always thought that was a cool idea on paper, but how is it in real life? Those have the AAAAA Flame Maple tops too, don't they? Nice collection. Very nice.

Not sure which I like better--the ES-295, the Push Tone LP, or that Viper GTS!

BTW, I have one of those "Red Label" Yamaha FG-300's, too! Here's mine:

Yeah, the guy talked me into buying it while i was looking for some guitar picks.lol...he is a good salesman!:thwap ...but really i like it a lot.It is an easy swap with the pups and does make for interesting combinations. It rings like a bell.
Thanks,David

Yep--the guitar is all original. Apparently, Yamaha was going for the Gibson Hummingbird look with that pickguard. I guess a lot of the FG-300's had problems with the pickguards peeling up/coming loose, but mine is still firmly glued on. You may also notice that mine has individually adjustable bridge saddles, something rarely seen on an acoustic. I bought it from the original owner in 1978, and don't intend to ever sell it.

Yeah i had heard about the pickguard problem. You have a rare one i think. I really like mine too and whenever i just want to play around it is one i usually grab off the wall. My wife just started using it and she really likes the fast neck and mellow tones. My pickguard had to be replaced i guess sometime in the past. I also have a fg-110 and it sounds ok but nothing like the 300. I will never sell mine either i think. Those old Yamaha's were really good players. I have been looking for a Vintage fg-360 for a while but can't seem to find one. Anyway, keep pickin! :thumbsup
