An eccentric, non-compromising, original, the likes that we'll not see again http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/captain-beefheart-dead-at-age-69-20101217

A true original and a huge influence on me as he managed to fuse free jazz with blues and rock.

Here are his 10 Commandments of Guitar Playing, which may seem like a joke, but read between the lines and you may find different ways of approaching playing your instrument.

He was an interesting and strange man.

A little more tribute this morning.

First, a couple of quotes that I think shed a lot of light on the way Van Vliet looked at music...

"I don't want to sell my music. I'd like to give it away because where I got it, you didn't have to pay for it."

"I'd never just want to do what everybody else did. I'd be contributing to the sameness of everything."

Second, a couple of covers of his songs done by the Black Keys. The second one I've been re-learning to play this morning.

He's one of those guys I will openly admit I don't get. Maybe someday.

Much of his music is definitely what one might call "challenging listening" but that's precisely what I like about it.

As the saying goes "no-one ever put on Trout Mask Replica to relax after a hard day at work" :)

A truly original artist and a sad loss.
