Ya know the Skynyrd song? Well I finally figured out what the inspiration for it was.....

tonight I (accidentally) plugged my M13 power supply into my Ibanez DE7. :thwap :thwap :thwap :thwap :thwap http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1PJQHxMWafo/SrZhAZBxaqI/AAAAAAAAADA/6PvmnYrGils/s200/infinity_symbol1.jpg

Ouch. Totally fried then?

You can always use it as a boat anchor for a rubber duck. :)

No man. I held in as long as I could and when I came to things smelled really strange. Far out.

Does everything still work? Or did you fry the power supply and pickups?

My DE7 is toast! And I'm a bummed out little boy. It's sort of like getting a lump of coal for Christmas...but I've been good. (sigh) I really liked that delay.

I can't read tonight, I thought a DE7 was a guitar... I was trying to figure out how you plugged the M13 power supply into that. Maybe you just blew the power supply circuit (a diode perhaps) and voodooman can fix it for you.

Are you sure you didn't just burn out a polarity protection diode? Lots of effects have them for just this reason.

I haven't opened it up yet. The smell is too repulsive at the moment. When I have more time after the gig this weekend I'll open it and see what happened.

I believe you are right Voodoo. Maybe you could tell me what part I need to replace. I can do the work just not the figuring it out. What got toasted is right behind the power supply input jack.

Looks like the protection diode did what it was supposed to do, at the expense of its own life. That's good--a 15 cent diode vs. the price of a new DE7 sounds like a pretty fair tradeoff.

What you need is a 1N4003 diode, though a 1N4002 should work just fine if you can't find one. You don't need the higher voltage rating of a 1N4003 in a 9V pedal, and that's the only difference between the two types, AFAIK.

It should be installed so that the stripe on the diode is facing toward the edge of the PCB, i.e. away from the red LED adjacent to it. As long as your "incendiary event" didn't take out the traces underneath the diode, it should fire right back up. When you get the old diode out, try to clean up the board the best you can. Dont use anything too sharp or abrasive, since that could damage the traces, which may already be embrittled or partially lifted by the heat. Try to get the solder pads on the back as clean as possible, or the solder might not adhere.

Oh, one other thing you should do, too. Pay attention to your AC adapter polarity from now on!!! :poke :reallymad:

Ya, ya. You're preaching to the choir now. It only takes me once to learn.:o

Thanks a ton for the info. This is what makes thefret so great.

Yea! Success. She lives again. I finally got around to firing up the soldering iron and got out the magnifying glass so that I could see well.

Thanks for the tips and help Voodoo. It's working like a charm again.:thumbsup

What do YOU use to get the little bit of old solder off the board?

Mark your power supplies so you'd know which is which. :)

:thwap Ya think?
I actually did have it marked but assumed I had the correct end. duh!

Excellent! Thought that would do the trick. Most modern pedals are diode-protected for the very reason you so ably demonstrated.

The product # 1816 stuff works very well for small desoldering jobs.
