View Full Version : Gassing for Gretsch (G6120SH Setzer Hot Rod)

I have had recurring gas for a Gretsch guitar. I thought I had gotten over it but my brother-in-law in the states recently contacted me about pricing Gretsch's here in Japan. He thought since the higher end models are made here, they might be cheaper (they aren't by a long shot). Anyway, I've found a good deal on a Setzer Hot Rod and am very close to pulling out my wallet.

For reference only. My deal is a Tangerine model:

Could anyone out there offer their hands on review? Does anyone own or have ever played any MIJ Gretsch's? Could someone help push me off of this cliff...?

I've played a used MIJ 6120 Gretsch, and several Korean Electromatic models.

I've never played a Setzer, for fear that I'd sell off my car to buy one.

Fit and finish of the 6120 was on par with Japanese standards for craftsmanship, which is to say that it was put together very, very well. I really liked the Bigsby, which was great for vintage, subtle vibrato. The guitar I played on (for a couple of hours in a south Austin music store, couldn't put it down) played great and sounded great.

Don't overlook the Electromatic line. The 5120 makes a fantastic modding platform. TV Jones makes a Filtertron pickup and mounting system that sounds out of this world if you like that Gretsch twang.

I've had GAS for a Cadillac Green Jet for a long time, but it's priced way out of my range.

Make sure it has the flame top for that amount of money.
I found this near mint used one for $1999 (http://www.gbase.com/gear/gretsch-6120ssu-brian-setzer-orange#), which is a good price.

The 5120 is a great deal. I haven't swapped out the p'ups on mine yet, but may still just to get into more authentic/vintage Great Gretsch Sound territory. If price is any indication of build or sound quality, the 6120 must be f***n suh-weet, because the 5120 ain't shabby. In fact a friend of mine A/B'd his 5120 against another buddy's 6120 and couldn't hear $2000 worth of difference at all.

But that BS Hot Rod is drool-worthy...

I have the RHH 6120 and its incredible. The tone is simply fantastic. It's a quality guitar for sure. Very easy on the fingers. GO FOR IT!!! You won't regret it.

Some day I will play good enough to justify purchasing such a beauty.

That's a beautiful guitar Tig. It is a different model from "mine" however. The Hot Rod's don't have any tone controls and, from what I've heard, slightly thinner bodies. Would love to have a niced flamed Setzer model like that but the price is beyond this particular impulse buy. The Hot Rod I'm looking at is a new one for $1,500.

Now THAT's what I wanted to hear! That's a definite push I just felt. Thank you...:D I need to talk to the seller and ask a few questions first. Unfortunately I'm going out in the country tomorrow. Hopefully it's still around until Monday and the answers to my questions are satisfactory. But now I'm starting to gas for the model that Tig put up. hmmm...

Well I pulled the trigger on the Hot Rod. Hope it's a good one. Unfortunately I leave for a long business trip in a few days but it should be waiting for me when I get back. :dude

What is up with the USPS?! Two weeks after ordering the guitar it has now finally left the US according to their tracking. I was so proud of myself too for my more-patient-than-usual attitude about the fact that it was taking awhile... :whatever:

The America that I remember could send men to the moon faster than this guitar is taking to get here...:hungry

There's a reason it's called "snail mail." :poke

Add to that the anticipation of a new, really cool guitar, and it all increases the anxiety factor by about a factor of 10, making it seem like 10 years to get there.

When I got my ESP from the custom shop, I had to wait about 6 months. That well and truly sucked!

6 months?! I'm clearly not strong enough for that kind of wait, Kat. :mad

Was it ultimately worth the wait?

When I got it, (back in the early 90's), it had a rosewood fretboard, and I had asked for maple.

I raised a ruckus with ESP, and rather than wait 6 more months, they offered a $500 discount. I accepted.

I then plugged it in and played. It was worth the wait, and the discount! :)

Thanks rrick
I'm sure I'll forget all about the wait when it gets here. Of course with time to wait and think, I'm really starting to gas for the Rev. Horton Heat model like you have.

I don't have a problem though. I'm in control... :D

Ok. I've been tracking this shipment since day one. After sitting in a Brooklyn P.O. for 2 weeks it slowly made it's way to N.J. before being sent to other places I don't begin to understand. I see this morning however that it is now at a post office a couple of kilometers from my home! Which means delivery probably (hopefully) today. Hopefully it's all in one piece and a real player. Been playing Stray Cat Strut and That'll Be The Day in anticipation...:dude
