By the way, Joe Bonamassa uses this idea quite often, although he usually will use the D and the B string, or G and E strings (skipping a string in between).

It's only Mixolydian if you play this over an E dominant chord. You can play it over an A Major chord too - the A Major scale has the same notes as E Mixolydian.
