I got myself a little tax return toy recently, and it's finally almost here! I've been wanting to downsize from my Marshall VS100, although I really love the way it sounds. One hundred watts is just too much for a little house. It sounds good at low volume, but you can tell that the Celestion wants to breathe...and I am slowly smothering it to death.

What could it be, Fretters? It's definitely sub-50 watt. It is not boutique, as I am still not making lawyer money. How well do you know my tastes, my friends? Let the games begin!

Well, no correct guesses so far, but Doug isn't TOO far off with one of his. In the general ballpark, anyway.

OK, I'll play.

One of those little 15-watt SS Squiers?

Yeah, Don, I tried to get a one-off from Alex that also serves as an energy-efficient golf ball washer, but he wouldn't sell it.

Jason - I did get one of those, but I'm saving it for your birthday present. Surprise!

Oh sweet! I've been gassing for one to use as a gerbil cage. I'm planning on doing the cat-protection mod on it!

I have the schematics and supplies all ready.

rebel 30?

That was my next guess! I'll pad my bet with a Rebel 20 (even though I like the 30 better).

Too bad you'd stand no chance against the computer. I'm alternatingly inspired/depressed by the success of the computer at Jeopardy.

I was considering saying that too. Good call.

Eric has part of it right. Those VHTs are nice, Robert. I did consider that one.

Marshall HAZE

It would be something thick and creamy.

I'll take a wild stab at a Blackstar HT-20.

Good call. I agree with that.

I doubt it. I'm thinking 40 watts (tube watts at that!) are too much for his application.

I'd be looking around in the 5 to 20 watt range.

Tweaker 15?

I know he's been very interested in a Tweaker...

Contradicting an earlier post of mine, maybe one of the new higher wattage Tweakers????

I think they also make a 15-watt version.

Btw, it's still not here. The UPS man is probably "testing" it right now. Or chucking it out the back of his truck to rearrange his packages.

Okay, I'm starting to feel guilty for keeping Eric up past his bedtime. It's a Blackstar HT-5! Whoo hooo! My apologies to Jason; I had already ordered this before you mentioned getting one. I didn't mean to steal your thunder.

By the way, I got this from the "Used" section of MF. Looks like it's a factory blem; the carrying handle has a slight "cut" in it. Not bad at all. I love factory blems!

Thanks, Eric. I really like it so far. I've got it running through my 1 x 12 Epi VJ cab, but I think I'll migrate it over to the 2 x 12 where the Night Train is sitting now. Yes, the Night Train has been dethroned for the moment.

Impressions so far from playing for about 45 minutes; the tone controls are WAY more responsive than my Night Train's. The Infinite Shape Feature, which is meant to shift the tone between British and American is pretty sweet. So far, I like it about in the middle, but slightly toward the UK side. The clean channel, as I expected, sounds really "sweet", but there's not a whole lot of clean headroom. It sounds best with alnico pickup guitars and the volume turned down a bit on the guitar itself. Diming the gain on the OD brings out the beast, and it sounds mean as hell. It doesn't sound like my Marshall, though. It might be the speaker, or just the fact that it hasn't broken in yet, but I still think the Marshall is king of high-gain.

Tomorrow I'm going to try using a jumper between the effects loop in and out, and see if that makes a difference. Might try some pedals in front of it, too.

So how are you digging your new amph?

I'm liking it a lot, Don. It seems to be more versatile tonewise than the Night Train. I did spend some time on the NT last night, after changing the power tubes. Might be just the power of suggestion, but it seems to sound throatier. They're both really great amphs!

If they wouldn't have raised the price on those, I would have one and wouldn't have known about the Jet City. I played the little mini-stack with two cabs and liked it a lot.

I'm not certain that I'll get one yet.

I've been eyeing this:
