space.com article (http://www.space.com/11115-japan-earthquake-shortened-earth-days.html):

According to geophysicist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.:

"The initial data suggests Friday's earthquake moved Japan's main island about 8 feet, according to Kenneth Hudnut of the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake also shifted Earth's figure axis by about 6 1/2 inches (17 centimeters), Gross added."

In a different aspect, Japan has moved the world... Emotionally. The huge outpouring of concern and thoughtful prayers for those suffering or lost has been beautiful. I believe over 50 countries immediately sent aid and rescue teams as well.

Sometimes we get caught up in the many distractions and dramas of daily life and need to be reminded that we are really all very similar, sharing so much.
