At least he had a good excuse for hitting the wall!

My Dad's first car (in 1951) was an old Model T. He said the steering wheel came off in his hands one day, so he tried unsuccessfully to steer it by holding onto the shaft. At least he didn't hit anything.

I did that too in a 48 'T. It had a Pontiac 389 in it and no seat yet. It was my friend's and he was working on it when he let me take it for a ride. When I took off I slid on the metal and pulled the wheel off. I tossed the wheel and held on to the shaft trying to reach the pedals. I hit a tree.
