I love all kinds of music but with all these new so called metal genres and since I no longer tour I am certain I am missing out on some really good new bands.

BUT IF THE LEAD SINGER ALL HE DOES IS SCREAM I HATE IT!!!!

So, whats good?

Just started listening to Animals as Leaders. The lead guitarist is Tosin Abasi, and he rips. Don't know if it's "metal", but there are elements there... and no singing.

I'll see what else I can dig up for you...

If you can wait until September 20th, Opeth is releasing a new album, Heritage, which feature all "clean" vocals. The musicianship should be the usual incredible stuff, and Mikael Ã…kerfeldt's artistic song writing is always a treat.

I was going to say Opeth too. (great minds, eh?)

There are quite a few good metal bands for sure. A large percent are European, Italian, German, Polish, and Scandinavian. There still are quite a few good North American ones as well but it seems as if many of them are on the trendy bandwagon and don't sing melodically.

Communic (http://www.communic.org/), Trivium (http://www.trivium.org/), Pagan's Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtPTlw4gSUc&feature=related), Sevendust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiMDewZ9dLA), Testament (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09rHDabBQfA&feature=relmfu), Hammerfall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkmlujV-TvU&feature=relmfu), Sonata Arctica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1zkXdqcajk&feature=related), Magnitude 9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkN6o7InvJg&feature=related) for instance that have good singing.

What worked for me, to find bands I like, was to find out what label a band was on then search the record label's catalog for similar acts. Nuclear Blast or Inside Out for instance have good bands. But I'm right with you. If I hear the grunting/screaming vocals I skip that band 99.9% of the time even if the backing music is really good.

I swear I spent 3 hours one day listening to tons of new metal bands on amazon...I didn't like any of them. IMO good metal was the 80's/90's.

Just out this last year, Sting in the Tail (http://www.amazon.com/Sting-Tail-Scorpions/dp/B0036XN2L2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1284893486&sr=1-1)
They decided to return to their 80's tones and recorded at the same studio in the Bahamas. I was a bit surprised how good these guys still sound. Some of the songs are a little hokey and there are the familiar ballads, but if you liked them in the past, you'll love this album.

Their concept album is brimming with modern tones and style, yet doesn't abandon the Scorpions' sound. I like this album more than the Sting in the Tail release for the overall feel and depth it has. Worth checking out the samples in Amazon.

My instinctive answers are Opeth and Mastodon. Opeth can have the screaming vocals sometimes, and if that bothers you might like Mastodon, though they can get a little drone-y at times. I personally dig both of them. If you're more into hard rock/metal, Porcupine Tree is worth a listen.

That's about as far as my metal knowledge goes, I'm afraid. Good luck. It looks like you already have some good suggestions from people.

Of newer stuff (I too hate the Cookie Monster vocals), I've been listening to:
3 Inches of Blood "Advance and Vanquish" and "Here Waits Thy Doom"--the former has a screaming vocalist to "complement" their regular vocalist
Anaka "The Glorified Crusade"
Black Tide "Light from Above"--the lyrics aren't anything to write home about, but they WERE teenagers when they wrote it . . .
The Sword "Warp Riders"

I've heard a little of the Black Veil Brides too, but I'm not sure how I feel about them yet.

FWIW, 3 Inches is basically power metal and The Sword is stoner metal. Not sure where to put Anaka and Black Tide. Both take a lot of cues from Metallica.

A fairly new group called Kyng has a new album (Trampled Sun (http://www.amazon.com/Trampled-Sun-Kyng/dp/B005FYCIOM/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1313876755&sr=1-1)) coming out in 5 weeks that looks promising.

I found this humorous write up on Fozzy:

For those of you who don't know, here's the story on Fozzy.

The year was 1981 and Fozzy had invented a new style of music called Heavy Metal. None of the companies in the U.S. wanted to sign them because they didn't think that this new music "Heavy Metal" was marketable. So they signed a contract with a Japanese label called Big Happy Mountain Rock Records. Only three weeks after signing the contract the company went under and folded.

Fozzy was stranded in Japan, with no money, no label and worst of all, a 20 year contract that prohibited them from leaving Japan or getting another deal. There was nothing they could do. They had made the grave error of signing a contract without first reading it.

The demos they had recorded were some of the greatest heavy metal songs ever written, some of which (The Prisoner, Live Wire, Stand Up And Shout) are on this album.

Bootlegs of these demos started making their way overseas and into the hands of American and European bands. None of these band songs could even come close to the songs on these demos. So when various bands found out that Fozzy was stranded in Japan for the next two decades, they stole the songs and claimed them for their own, with no monetary compensation to Fozzy!

The sound exploded worldwide and out of the brilliance of Fozzy's work came every genre of metal imaginable.

Fozzy's influence was everywhere even though only a handful of people in North America knew where it originated.

Almost 20 years later and free of their contract the band decided to expose the farce and the result is this album. On this album they re-recorded those original demos (for sound quality purposes) and put them together for the first time. 8 of the 10 songs showcased here, for the first time by the original artists, made it onto someone else's albums over the years and other 2 are heard here for the first time anywhere.

The tracks are as follows:

1. Stand Up And Shout (stolen by Dio)
2. Eat The Rich (stolen by Krokus)
3. Stay Hungry (stolen by Twisted Sister)
4. The Prisoner (stolen by Iron Maiden)
5. Live Wire (stolen by Motley Crue
6. End Of Days (never appeared on anyone else's album, appears here for the first time)
7. Over The Mountian (stolen by Ozzy Osbourne)
8. Blackout (stolen by Scorpions)
9. Feel The Burn (same as track 6)
10. Riding The Wind (stolen by Judas Priest)

Some other of the stolen gems found there way onto future Fozzy releases as well.

So now the little truth has finally been exposed: The genius of Moongoose McQueen and the vision of Duke LaRue is where heavy metal truly originated.

I listened to about the first half of the album. Some of the keyboard bits remind me a lot of old Yngwie. There were even parts where the vocal harmonies were somewhat like Whitesnake. It's basically good, old-fashioned power metal.

Listened to it twice today as I was driving to pick up my son. My only gripe is that the lyrics to the first track are very anti-people-in-my-line-of-work. Chariot is one of my early favorites. Good power metal.

Dawn Over Zero has formed from years of Study. The band uses a combination of bold technicality with lyrical grace to take the listener on a journey from the end of one spectrum to another. Mike Mears employs the power of his voice over a wide range while Jared Mears counters his melodies with powerful guitar work. Nathan Machart's bass and Mack Linan's drums create a powerful rhythm foundation to give the music the drive, while harmonies and effects enhance both the lyrical and beastly points of the music. The band has been said to have Incubus groove, King’s X soul and a song writing style that is best described as "Heavy Melodic."

Awesome album. Only clean vocals, so if you don't like the death metal growl, you'll be okay with this album. I saw them in concert a few weeks back. Totally awesome. I have a bunch of videos from the show that I'll upload to youtube if anyone is interested. :dude

It's pretty good right out of the gate, but it keeps growing on me. I still haven't had time for a headphone/concentration/wine listen yet though.

If you like it you might also enjoy the new Magic Pie -"Suffering Joy" or Pallas - "XXV."
