We promised our kids each a trip with a parent when they turned 13, as long as it was somewhat reasonable, and had some educational component to it. My oldest picked me and picked southern california to do robotics at legoland, and maybe take a surf or dive lesson. We may do an ocean cruise to see dolphin (Dana Point) or head out to Catalina island, or go to Scripps as an alternative to the surf or dive lesson.

We will be staying at my mom's timeshares that she didn't use this year at Marriot Newport Coast Villas and is letting us use. It is right above Crystal Cove State Park. We have been there before, and I must say it is pretty darned nice. I may get the chance to catch Mark Wein playing at the Blue Beet http://www.thebluebeet.com/beet-music.htm in Newport Beach as they allow minors prior to 10. It would be fun to see Mark play live and to meet in person. Will update later!

Looking forward to seeing the ocean and having father/son time with my 13 year old!

Cool trip! Your kids will remember their trip for the rest of their lives.

The best week I ever spent with my Dad was when I was 12. We flew to Colorado, rented a 4-wheel drive and camped all over the state as the leaves were changing. We camped in a different spot each day, and explored all day long. It was awesome!

If you get to Catalina say hi to my old bass player Kent. Just look for the tallest guy on the island.

If you're looking for something to do and you have a HOT day.....go to San Diego Safari Park in Escondido (35 miles NE of San Diego; near where I-15 and I-78 meet) and somewhere between 3-5 PM get to the elephant area and you may get to see 3 baby and 3 juvenile elephants (and possibly the adults) playing in their pool. Utterly fascinating.

Oh yeah, they have a cheetah run at 5PM and that is neat to which it run full-out over 100 yds.
