To me, Poison represents the way I remember 1986. Not saying it is the best anything, just that when I think 1986 that is the soundtrack that is in my head. Kind of cool to see Robert Cray in there. I was definitely into his music then.

Going solely from that list, I'd go with EVOL.
I'll have to do some research on other albums released that year to see if there's anything else I'd put ahead of that one.

Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? - Megadeth

Either Yngwie or Metallica. I was confused because the subject of the post said 1996.

Still not as bad as Rolling Stone naming London Calling best album of the 80s when it was released in 1979.

Rolling Stone best of lists... :punch:

I forgot that I could change the thread title by editing the OP in Advanced mode. Fixed it.

Eric Johnson - Tones
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy
Tesla - Mechanical Resonance
Black Sabath - Seventh Star
Van Halen - 5150
GTR - GTR
David Lee Roth - Eat em and Smile

This was 1986 for me. I'm not sure I could pick a "best" though.

Ok, looked up the release dates for some stuff in my library. Not sure I'd put it ahead of EVOL but Spacemen 3's Sound of Confusion is another great 1986 guitar album.

"Life's Rich Pageant" by REM is the most significant album of 1986 for me. Sure, I heard a lot of Bon Jovi, and I was listening to a lot of Ska and punk, but the lush, layered guitar arpeggiations etc. by Peter Buck and Co. provide the most memorable guitar sound from that year for me. "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Reckoning" are my two favorites from that band. I also listened to a fair amount of the English Beat and the Beat that year. First year of law school for me. It is surprising how little of that list I own, or listened too very much.

I'd have to go with Other: Steve Earle's Guitar Town.

Followed closely by Slayer's Reign in Blood.

Now THERE's a combo you don't see every day.

WRT "Life's Rich Pageant" it certainly was an important REM album, but I'm not sure it would fit "best guitar album."

Ah, that gets into the old discussion, what role does a guitar need to play in the music to be considered a good guitar album. The lush guitar sounds of this album make it better to me than others on the list. Always an opinion thing of course. ;) My other pick on the list is probably The Ramones one, or EVOL by Sonic Youth. Probably that one off the list. LOL!

See, I knew I'd miss one.
I would put Guitar Town ahead of the two I'd previously named.
I play the solo from the title track pretty much every time I pick up the guitar.
If this was 1985 and not 86 this would be significantly easier for me.

"Life's Rich Pageant" by REM

One of, if not their best albums. Peter Buck created some great riffs (or is it "finger styles"?).

Gotta be, for me, a tie...

Yngwie's Trilogy
Metallica's Master of Puppets

There are quite a few on that list that I listened to a lot as well.

John Scofield's Blue Mattter is a great 1986 guitar album.
It didn't influence me as a player as directly as Guitar Town or EVOL but it's one of many great Sco albums.
