To help out a friend who finds himself in tough financial straits, I sorted through my immense pile of pedals and came up with the following stuff to sell, with the proceeds to go to him. All are handmade (3 by me and one by another DIY'er at the BYOC forum) with the exception of the last item. I have intentionally priced these to move--some of the prices are just stupid-low for quality handmade pedals. I also have these up for sale at the BYOC forum, so it's first come, first served. Pricing includes shipping (US & Canada, cheapest way, buyer is responsible for loss or damage in transit). If you want modified shipping terms (faster mode, insurance, deliv. conf.) or to an international destination, I'll give you a quote for an adder above the stated price.

1) First up is an early build of mine back when I was still fairly new at decaling, so it's not as slick looking as my later stuff. But it works just dandy! This is a Ross Gray compressor clone built with the old BYOC v.1 comp PCB, in a 125B enclosure. $55 **SOLD**

2) Here's a BSIAB2 (Brown Sound in a Box v.2) from GGG that just needs a bit of work. I took one of the pots out because I needed it in a pinch and never got around to replacing it. I'll include the correct pot need to reassemble, so you just need to wire it back together. The instructions are all available on the GGG website. $40 **SOLD**

3) This isn't really a pedal, it's a 0.5W solid state amplifier--the Noisy Cricket design from Beavis Audio Research. Works great but I just never use it anymore with the collection of tube amps I've amassed. REDUCED!! $45

4) This is a home built pedal....just not my home! I bought this a while back from another BYOC forum member. Cool pedal, tube driven! Comes with its own 12V power adapter and an extra 12AX7 tube. $65 **SOLD**

That's it for the home-brewed stuff. Here's the one commercial pedal:

5) DigiTech Bad Monkey in really great shape. I was very tempted to hang on to this, because it's an excellent overdrive, very flexible. Built like a tank. Has had very little usage. New ones go for $50 at all the music sites. $30 **SOLD**

The tube OD looks interesting. How would you describe its tones? Is it a clone of anything?

Hey Vood, could you describe the Ross Gray Compressor clone? What does it do best or what kind of sound does it excell at? Could you compare/contrast it with your 5-Knob Compressor? Thanks Dood!!

It's a Linear Power Boost (LPB-1) circuit run into a DIY project known as the Matsumin Valvecaster, named after the Japanese DIY'er who came up with the design. You can tailor the amount of drive by changing the 12A*7 tube type installed in it. I'm going to check with the guy I bought it from re: the tubes he tried in it. I ran a 12AU7 in it, which is the tube it was originally designed for. With the pre-boost off, it's more of a tubed-driven boost than an overdrive, but has some nice warm crunch when you kick on that boost stage. Definitely a softer character to the overdrive than you get from a solid state pedal using diode clipping to generate the distortion. He sent me a couple of 12AX7's with it, but I don't recall having tried them. They may be too high gain to be useful in this circuit, in which case I'll substitute a couple of lower gain preamp tubes.

It's the classic Ross compressor circuit that's long been a pedalboard mainstay, especially for country players. Probably the two most popular vintage comressor cicrcuits were this one and the MXR DynaComp, though they're almost identical and only differ by a couple of components. It behaves like any classic compressor circuit is supposed to--it tames initial note attack and lengthens the decay time, i.e. sustains the note longer. Other than that, it's quite transparent. Three controls--Level (usually set to unity gain w/r to the unprocessed signal), Sustain (self-explanatory) and Attack, which controls how quickly the circuit "clamps down" on the signal. This last control was not part of the original Ross/DynaComp circuit, and was added as an enhancement. The 5-Knob is basically a Ross circuit, too, but with a couple of additional controls added. Keith at BYOC replaced his original Ross/Dynacomp design with the 5-Knob, but found that a lot of players liked the simplicity of the original design, so he recently reintroduced the straight Ross clone as the Classic Compressor kit. I have one of those, so I don't need this one, too.

Hypothetically, would the circuitry allow it to be used for bass as easily as guitar?

Hypothetically.

Hypothetically, yes. Might have to change a couple of caps to let more of the bass frequencies through, but that stuff is easy.

Cool! That Bad Monkey sounds great through the C-30, and should be in every guitar man's arsenal! Good score!

Thanks Steve, looking forward to it! I've purchased from DVM before and have always been a happy camper... this was a no brainer. :)

What's with the SS pedal amp, DVM? Is it like the EHX ones -- the 22 Caliber and 44 Magnum?

Only in concept. Those run at higher voltage and much higher current draw to get wattages up in their stated ranges. This is 0.5W, so far less output. But you'd be amazed at how loud a half watt is through a reasonably efficient speaker--e.g. 0.5W output into a 100 dB efficiency-rated speaker at 1 meter distance will produce a sound pressure level of 97dB! But little SS amps like this one are really for those occasions when you just want some modest amplification--low volume practicing, playing downstairs when the family is asleep upstairs, noodling around with a new song idea, etc.--and don't want to (or can't) crank up a bigger amp. Plug your guitar into the input, a speaker cab into the output, hook up a standard 9V pedal power supply, and away you go. It will even run on 9V batteries, but you better have plenty of spares, because it will burn through them pretty quickly....
