Scanning business news, I ran into an article spelling the expected microchip growth and the coming of 64-GB smartphones was mentioned.

I am totally behind on a lot of tech things, mostly 'cause only very few things would grab me (exception: iPads, and these tiny, sexy video cams being considered) so, 64 GB on a phone sounds fantastic to me.

Should I see a doctor...? I mean, about the 64 GB?

The 64GB is flash storage, not RAM. And given that people are loading these things up with movie after movie I guess the more space the better. That said, even though I am in this industry, I still find it incredible that the average phone today has more computational power than the mainframes of the 70's.

Oh yeah, and what it took to run these beasts, raised floors, filtered air... a lot of stuff going on!

Take a look at this 5MB disk from 1956! Could you picture 64GB made from this!

Oh, we have a Pan Am Clipper, here.
Yikes... hard to believe the lack of protective packaging of that piece of equipment.
Maybe it was so that it would fit into the plane?

I once did graphics for a piece of equipment like that, where the crate had to be reconfigured once at the dock, to make it through hallways and such. i still have the graphics... on a spare 40 GB drive!

I'm still waiting for a direct cerebral connection or implant, so I don't have to think anymore! :bootyshake

Any sci-fi book fans remember Louis Wu in Ringworld? He was a "wirehead", a person who was addicted to the brain's pleasure center stimulation of the drug like electrical current from an implant. I haven't read the series in a decades, but this stuck in my head. I have always feared the future possibility of computational device implants. We are already seeing a whole generation or more addicted to video games and portible phone/tablets. Ooookay, I've derailed things a bit here.

One cool thing to look for in the handheld future are the silicone based batteries. They should be much thinner and last much longer between charges.

I know thinking is hard, but I'd rather do it myself, however poorly. Besides, can imagine all the software bugs? What would be the reset switch? ;-)
