View Full Version : Crash Pad weirdness continues apace

So, it's weird enough that I'm working on album cover concepts for a Crash Pad record, and spent a couple hours over Christmas weekend on song order for the LP.

Songs are off in ATL waiting their turn for mastering by this fellow:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Mills

He's done FOUR Skynyrd albums! And James Brown. And Pearl Jam. Shite.

Anyhow, tonight my drummer, Bruce, texts me. He got a call from someone 3 hours south of here (really out in the sticks, right in the middle of the state like 50 miles east of Tampa, dead center of the state). This person knows a friend of his, who Bruce has been chatting up the band to, and this unknown guy wants Crash Pad to play in his burg and is willing to pay actual money for us to do so. Apparently he saw the youtube videos from our Labor Daze show done a few months back and he nevertheless considers us a legit band. Ha.

Now keep in mind that Crash Pad is a punk rock and roll band that regularly makes nothing at shows, or maybe $30 or $50 split 4 ways is a good night. A couple weeks ago we made $33 at a benefit and it was like Christmas came early. Of course, we only play a single set. Anyhow, this guy down south is willing to pay us what some cover bands probably get for a whole night, PLUS half again that for "travel expenses," for a single set. Am advised by Bruce that Commie imagery in stagewear might not fly so well but otherwise, these cats just want to rock out so if we go with the usual denim/camo/leather we'll be good. Heck, for this money I'd wear khakis and a button down. Well maybe not but you get the idea.

But at any rate this is some weird shite. Real money for playing originals? Srsly?

Otay!

Brian,

Earning money from gigs mean's that you can then buy more equipment or replace equipment when the need arises. As for you commie clothes, it may not go down with the crowd (kinda thinking of the Blues Brothers RAWHIDE scene).

Thanks fellers.

Fortunately right now I'm pretty set for gear.

;)

So for the short run the extra dosh will be used to get promo CD's, but once that's done it'll go in our pockets, which'll be a nice change.

On the clothing issue, it's not really a big deal. The only time I've ever been onstage in fullbore Commie gear was for Boo Fest this year, and it's a (post-)Halloween celebration where many people are in costume. As for movie scenes, I'm thinking more the biker bar in "Peewee's Big Adventure."

Getting paid to do what you love is a beautiful thing, isn't it?

Good advice. Will have them fax an agreement "to our lawyer" without mentioning that he is me. Convenient, that.

Sounds like a great gig.

I hope so!

I've always had a great time playing out of towners, and only got stiffed once, in St. Augustine (and that was only a partial stiff). For whatever reason one seems to just get a bit more respect when you've come from somewhere else. I've played in Tampa, Orlando, Ocala, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Ft. Myers, but it's been a few years since I was last outside GNV for a show.

Remember that when you where that button down shirt with the khakis that you button it all the way up to the top button! Will give you that cult look you are searching for!! :rockya
