This month I'm doing a series of lessons on licks from horn players...no guitar in an effort to help folks break out of the "playing guitar patterns" rut. This week we've got a lick from a Louis Armstrong recording from 1928 or so called "Hotter than That". I've got that recording here: http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/showthread.php?33638-Lick-of-the-Week-Horn-Lines-1-Louis-Armstrong!

If you are not familiar with the Major Scales or need a little refresher you can find lessons on them here:

CAGED System Primer - An introduction to Fretboard Theory (http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/content.php?125-CAGED-System-Primer-An-introduction-to-Fretboard-Theory)

Major Scale Lesson #2 (http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/content.php?127-Major-Scale-Lesson-2)

The lick itself is in Eb Major, and then I have it in C and G major for comparison.

One last little bit of spam is that we've got the legendary James Harman and Nathan James in our studio on Saturday January 21st at 2:30pm PST for a webcast. If you're in town for NAMM and want to hang and hear some great blues and ask some questions we are right down Katella Ave from teh Anaheim Convention Center and if you're not in the area you can watch online via our uStream.tv channel! http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/showthread.php?33515-Tom-Harkenriders-BluesCast-featuring-James-Harman-and-Nathan-James-Saturday-Jan-21st

A fresh and welcome perspective to playing. I think Paul McCartney has always favored the older jazz and burlesque style compositions, and this fits in nicely.

Thanks Tig! One of my performance classes is playing Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band this month and the guitar player has to cop all of the horn lines...it's been fun watching the students try and nail that down but well worth it. Thats probably more from George Martin in that case but its the same idea...
