Without the original finish, is it worth it? Hard to say. Someone will probably buy it.

It'll sell, but I'm sure that $250K is just a starting point. Greater Boston is full of wealthy people, and some of them are guitar players and J. Geils fans, a Boston area band. That music store is right around the corner from my daughter's college, and I'll be there this Friday. Might have to stop in and see it!

P.S. Come to think of it, I saw him play that guitar at a concert at Colgate University back around '71. One of the highest energy performances by a band I've ever seen. Peter Wolf and Magic Dick were great....

What is the 'going rate' for an actual 1959 LP these days, provided it's original? I know you guys say it's overpriced or cheap or whatever, but I've heard wildly varying prices on what they're actually worth (read: will sell for). What would you expect a non-modified one to sell for?

I only found one completed listing that sold on eBay for $6K. Not sure why it went so cheap, but the details listed were pretty scant. Elderly Instruments doesn't have any Standards, but they have two '59 Customs listed, one for 39K, one for 70K. Since that is the "Holy Grail" of LPs, I am quite sure that a Standard in very good condition could fetch over 100K. But $250K? That seems like the kind of price only a big J. Geils fan would pay for a modified (as in not all original) '59.

He's hoping that his name, and the status of the band will be enough to justify the high price. I see a busted neck (albeit one that's been repaired) Les Paul, being sold as a '59, with loads of replacement parts and a refin. He might still get a good chunk o' money, but a quarter million dollars? Naw, it ain't gonna happen. That's Clapton guitar money.
