Probably to protect the glass from scratches and lodged rocks in soles.

I wouldn't be able to play guitar for a week my hand would be holding the railing so tight it wouldn't loosen for a while, either that or I'd be crawling right next to the cliff. With my eyes closed. I can't imagine building it.
