Anxiously awaiting Friday's delivery of a new Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Short Scale (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JagBsVMSSCar) :hungry

Black was tempting, but the candy apple red won. I'm looking forward to finally returning to my low end love.

That looks pretty nice. That should set you up nicely to join an indie band.

Well I'll be darned Tig, I didn't know you were a closet low-ender.

I love CAR and would really like a jazz bass in that color. Bound and blocked too, thank you.

The Squiers are amazingly nice basses. They sound and play far beyond what the price would suggest.

I'm very excited for you and your new bass!

Ah, a man who understands this purchase!
I was looking into a Jazz bass as that's my favorite, but I love how the Modified Jag's use a combination of J and P style pickups while using a Jazz neck profile.

I have always loved a good bass line, and owned a pretty good Ibanez 5 string in the past. Now that my finger picking right hand has developed, bass seems like a natural progression.

So Doug, tell me why you wanted short scale? I would like to get into bass a little bit, if only to make myself more versatile if I ever get a little band put together. I went looking at basses and saw a similar pickup configuration in a full scale. Curious as to why you wanted the shorter one.

Very nice!

The black PG and headstock against the CAR paint really set that one off.

I have two P/J basses and really love that combination.

Because I have a closet full of short scale pants!
My hands hurt quite a bit of the time, so a lower string tension is appealing. People with similar problems like arthritis like the shorter scale, so that was a good indication. Otherwise, I'd go with a standard 34" scale I suppose.

Hey Doug,

Do you have any reports on tone and playability?

I'm not in the market, but it would be nice to get your impressions of the bass.

Hey Doug,

Do you have any reports on tone and playability?

I'm not in the market, but it would be nice to get your impressions of the bass.

Unlike guitars where my ear has been educated on tone nuances, bass is harder to get an accurate impression with. If I already had a bass amp and other basses to compare with, my impressions would weigh more. Also, playing through guitar amps and cabs may not help, nor will not playing a bass in 14 years. I'll be browsing the local pawn shops for at least a practice amp unless I find a good deal on something with power.

So, that said, I like what I hear and feel. The satin neck feels great in my hand. The setup is pretty close to what I think it should be, but I'll wait until my right hand technique improves before adjusting the action. I must be plucking the hell out of the strings at the wrong angle sometimes, causing them to buzz the frets. My thumb picking has a much softer attack. I get no fret buzz using a pick.

I'd like to run everything through a bass amp to get a better picture. I love the P/neck pickup tones more than the bridge, but blending them at various levels makes for some sweet thump.
