I just started a new transcription series on Charlie Christian and posted 2 new videos. They are both II-V phrases, the first of which clearly exemplifies why they called it “swing”. The second phrase raises the question, “Was Christian, one of the first guitarists to play amplified, ahead of his time?” Upon analyzing this phrase off his solo on “Seven Come Eleven” with Benny Goodman’s band, you’ll find him accenting the “13” as an upper extension over a dominant, as well as employing a series of wide interval leaps. So was Christian an early precursor of what post bop guitarists nowadays sometimes refer to as “intervallics” , or was it a fluke? Personally I think Christian simply had a superb ear and a natural ability to come up with great sounding lines. What do you think?
