Live performance is where a band makes real money. It used to be records (what the record company didn't already take) and song writer royalties.

If you hit the big time it is. Of course, some of that goes to travel, roadies, stage show, etc. The problem is actually making the big time.

it may be feeding on itself and started this way: In order to book John Mayer, you gotta have an arena-sized venue (which spoils it a bit IMO), then JM thinks he should get more $$$

I have seen to a couple of known acts (spouse's idea), and the mostly baby-boomer audience seems eager to pay as much as it takes. Baffling.
More and more venues seem to serve drinks, so these premium-ticket holders end up spending more time at the bar than on the floor...! Spoiled, they are.
